I have been reading this forum for a while now, and in many of the lounge threads, I see people talking about how cheap houses are in Thailand and other places like that are .. Where do I find these?

I have looked for property to rent in Thailand, Peurto Rico, Singapore and other places like that, and none are really that cheap.

    Any resources?

A lot of the cheap stock aren't the type that are advertised on the Internet.

If they are on the internet they are normally asking way more than they want. I'm from the states but currently living on the beach in Mexico. I hit tons of pages, sent out offers all over the place and ended up getting a great place for less than half the asking price. I will probably spend a couple of months here and then pick a new country.

    That's the life man!

Did you just go out there, and look for a place while you was out there?

I had never been here before but have been to other areas of Mexico many times. I just heard this was a good area and that it would be surfing season. This was my first time and now being in the area if I wanted to extend my stay I could probably find a tad better deal but not by much. In general if you are going somewhere for the first time be very careful about any sort of upfront payment. I put down a deposit that I was willing to lose and said I would pay the rest in person after inspecting the place which I did.

The moment they see you're a foreigner the price will double or triple :D , stay in a motel for some days , make some friends and let them rent a house for you .
I had a friend that got me a good house last year in the Philippines for something like 120$/month ;)

I have lived in Asia for years and the best deals for property are mostly found in the local areas not on the Internet where all the agents hang out marking up the price sometimes to exorbitant price ranges as they do not care money is all that matters to them

As somebody who has lived in a few 3rd world countries, you get what you pay for. Sure, you can live on a very low sum of money, but after awhile this novelty wears off and the reality of living amongst a culture which you're never truly going to blend in with or be a part of will set in. Visit a place before investing, and definitely rent for at least a year before buying, unless the price of the house is truly disposable to you. Or just find a wife then go elsewhere ;)

That said, use google's translation software to search in these places' native languages. You're not going to find anything cheap in English. Also, a lot of these places will post classifieds of the house, but no photos. It's hard to find properties without visiting.

Yeah! Once you become known people start looking for you with real estate deals and rentals. The Philippines has good potential.

Anything advertised online in English is going to be priced well above local market rates. Bsas or even Munich are the same way. Have a local make contact and get price for best rates.

If you want a cheap house for rent in Thailand, you have to go there and search local.
90% of the classified websites in english language are listing "farang" prices:p.

You need to find something private to rent if you want it cheaper than regular tourists. Even cheap charlies budget hotels will cost ~400Baht (~$12) a night.

Also it depends on what you consider as "cheap". I stayed 9 month (with visa runs) in a 3 room apartment and payed 12000Bht/month (~$390) for it. I consider it very cheap because in my country you wont even find a rat hole to rent for 390dollar.
