When you are searching your keyword results do you base it off the results via quotes or over all.

    I.E "Discount New york hotels"
    or Discount New york hotels

What would a good ratio be considered for your keyword niche?

To find out your true competition, you need to use your keyword in quotes. Start with 15-20 keywords for your niche using your favorite keyword tool (I prefer the Google Adwords keyword tool). Make sure they are longtail keywords (3-5 words) because it's easier to rank for them when you're just building your site. Optimize your website with the keywords that have the least page results. The number of pages will vary based on your niche. The page results will give you an idea how hard you're going to need to promote your site. For example, trying to rank for your name could be a lot easier than ranking for weight loss, so less effort will be needed to promote your site.
