For example, if i am writing an article on a certain plant would it be good to footnote or link keywords with Wikipedia and other articles that have talked about similar finding of the plant itself this could lead people away from your site but could it also help your rankings?

Thank you

I never do that, and it works out just fine. The only links I build are internal links to other articles on my site. Some people do link out to other sites as well, I never do though and I've never had any issues with rankings.

you can do that and IMO it's helpful to link out to reablie sources.
But you can do fine without outbound links, it churns out time when you want to research for non-competivie but useful outbound links rather than simple wiki or wiki-like kind of link sources.

What you should do is link to other similar articles in your site.
It would be much more beneficial. Linking out has not been proven to have any real advantage.

If it adds further value, go for it. When you are writing content, I would suggest you think from the user's point of view. put yourself in their shoes. I see more engagement and money from my and client sites following this rule. Both outbound and inbound links help for SEO.

100% this. Do what's best for your users, this will help bounce rate and time on site metrics.

You can do that. It will help to increase traffic of the article.

Link to real authority sites. If we write any health content we'll link to CDC or NHS etc
