When will Virtual Reality finally become a thing? What's the future of VR?

I've been following the introduction of Virtual Reality back when VR was pretty much a sci-fi fantasy. In the last few years, a couple giants in the field like Google, Facebook, Sony, etc caught onto the idea of being the next big thing and are probably going to churn out some mainstream VR gear within the next couple of years.

What do you see as the future of VR?

Virtual strip clubs, immersive .hack//Sign style games, virtual shopping centres, etc.

Ideally technology will get to the point where all we will have to do is plug in headsets to our smart phones and enter virtual worlds.

I need VR to help measure buildings in every angle by just looking at them. This will help me quote for termite treatments on homes. Aslo would need the VR to help keep me up with production with my company by projecting out all of my agenda in a split of a second. My hands should be the "mouse" and have the option to edit my agenda and all employees workdays, plus see where there at and how long they have been working and have that big map out in front of me showing the amount of money I am making off that on particular route.

Virtual reality is defently due for it's time. I'm becoming more bored of life. Need something to do while driving down the road. Maybe play COD while driving or a race game. Just kidding but when I wakeup, maybe VR could solve my gay lame day

I don't think it will really take off until they fix the interface. There are too many issues with having light that close to the eye. They would need some way to directly interface the brain.

VR is definitely the future, not only for games but generally for everything, like the user above said, it will help architects, even help people decide where to travel by seeing common views of the country (you should be able to see a preview on travel agencies in the near future), and gaming will be awesome as well.

However I'm not very excited by the current VR systems yet, I'm waiting for the "big" leap once the neuroscience is at a point where full dive virtual reality will be possible.

It's got quite a bit of time before I feel it will be worth a damn.

    ^^

I think people overestimate the effect VR would have on obesity, I think we would see more skinnier guys than fat ones. Unlike regular computer play you can't eat while playing with VR (you can with the current technology but it still confuses your senses and you'll most likely dirty yourself up while trying to eat lol, and with full dive VR which should be possible in the next 50 years you won't be able to eat while playing so yea.)

I see a big demand in washable keyboards when VR gets better and people can plugin their fleshlights.

The porn industry tanked so hard because of the Internet. VR is the one thing that can save it or at least keep it above water.
