By 'competition' I'm not just talking about how many results on Google compete for the same keyword target.

I'm also talking about the QUALITY of your competition.

For example, if you type in a keyword and you get the following
    - few pieces of content directly compete for the keyword
    - most results don't even answer the questions embodied by your search term
    - results are Youtube videos
    - results are forum posts / Quora / Reddit
    - very short content

If you get the above, your competition is WEAK or moderate at best

    But if you pull up
    - very long pieces of content
    - authority content

    Then your competition is STRONG

Do you use the analysis above?

Unless if it's a big money making keyword that you are 100% sure that you want to rank for, then yes, an analysis should be performed. As going for such a big money making keyword will entail a considerable amount of resources (money) to be able to rank something well for that keyword, and it also takes time, having proper analysis done would give assurance that you will get to the spot that you want, within $x amount of budget, and x amount of time. Otherwise, if that's not your primary concern, and just blogging for something, but not necessarily need to rank for that, I don't think you need any analysis for that.

Also, please get the free Mozbar and look at the DA/PA of the results. Anything over 30 might be hard to rank for.

@blackbeans your analysis looks sensible to me, so i would like to add few more things, about which i heard & looks logical to test while analyzing competition over certain niche.

So when you search certain query in Google, so figure out what kind of site ranking in top #10 results, it may be either Blogs, Quora Results, Forums, Videos, Authority Site etc

Logic is 'If you target a keyword then try to rank similar type of site, which type of already ranking' what we can say set of preference results (SPR).

This way you can target the correct type of site for certain niche query results, which are preferred by google to rank.

I have not tested this trick till now, but would like to know someone thought if already experimented.

IMO, any company or individual must be wary of how/what their competitors are posting. This helps you set a benchmark for your own blog piece and with good promotion, might also help you rank better.

Check what is working/not working for your competitors - because it is true that you're trying to rank for the same type of keywords as they are. This analysis gives you a general idea of what you should include in your content marketing strategy and how you could do it better.

This is how I do it as well. Thankfully all of my hobbies are obscure ones with no competition.

Knowledge in your chosen niche is a big plus to gaining readers, i would always look at my blogs competition it drives me to be good as or better than them .. i think there is loads of room for many blogs on the same niche so long as they have something to offer readers

Yes, I analyse the competition in a similar way. I think it’s necessary to know who you’re competing with when choosing keywords and writing content. Thus, you know if you need longer articles, better graphics, more backlinks and social signals, etc
