Lets say your niche is "Building Websites Using Notepad" and you obviously want to rank for #1 on the spot (example), for the keywords, lets assume they are: "Using HTML in notepad", "Coding PHP in Notepad", and "Designing a website in notepad".

Do you want to rank for #1 for your keywords as well or do you just want the keywords to have little competition?

Ranking and competition go hand in hand. The lower the competition, the less SEO work you have to do to rank well.

    I shoot for several things.

    1. That I can rank well for my keywords.
    2. That my keywords have little competition.
    3. That my keywords have a decent "exact" search per month. (at least 1,000 searches per month)

Remember that Google ranks pages within a site for keywords. So treat each page like a micro niche site and try to rank for one keyword per page.

    Thanks for the post.

How would I go for ranking for these keywords? Should I be posting more articles that mention those keywords or have backlinks with anchor texts to those keywords or a mix of both?
