I'm trying to figure out why many of my sites - after building tons of backlinks get ranked very high (at first - on 1st page) and then afterwards get rolled down to 3rd 4rth or 5th page (an gets no traffic

What I don't understand is - if google likes "these" kind of spammy backlinks why not keep the site on pg #1 and if they don't why rank it high in the first place?

The only "theory" I have is that googles is checking for the click through rate

If that's the case them increasing CTR means that my site will STAY ON TOP..

Do u agree? Or can anyone think of a different theory?

    Let's Talk...

They're not testing your CTR. It's a simple thing called the Google Dance. Look it up :p

When this happens, when you suddenly fall back like that. hit SUPER hard. When I get sandboxed or I dance in the wrong direction, I hit it super hard with 1000's of backlinks and it never fails - it's going to come back stronger than ever.

Your rankings will fluctuate commonly. Even if/when you hit slot 1, you'll still pop out now and again. It's a constant battle and you should never give up fighting.

I know about the google dance

My question is why if for exame u don't build backlinks do u fall back down? If google thinks of your backlinks as spam why would they rank u in the first place and if they don't why wouldn't u stay at place #1?

    its like fight club.

"If it's your first night in Fight Club, you have to fight."

My theory is, they throw your site up there, and give it a week or so to let it "be seen".

In theory, if your content was astoundingly good, then people would naturally start linking to it immediately.

In which case, it makes sense for them to leave it "in the ring" e.g. on page 1.

In most cases, no one links to you much. Hence it makes sense to throw the site back to the "minor leagues". -- where it can keep aging and getting links and working its way back up.

I watched this happen a lot during the clickbump and xfactor days.

I was doing a test on this. If I'm not mistaken, they keep track of CTR and Bounce rate, at least on sites using analytics, so why wouldn't they put that in the 200+ factors that rank a website.

Honestly, no one knows if they do or don't. Why not just in case, help the CTR be in your favor.

I was using MTURK to do it, and I want to blame my increase in the SERPs from that, but I was doing a few other things at the same time. It was costing me $1/day, for 40+ unique visitors, who searched my keyword, clicked on my site (I was on page 1), stayed there for 2 minutes, and clicked an internal link before leaving.

I'll be redoing the test, probably in 2 weeks.

If anyone else wants to do, that'd be awesome if you shared your results.

They have a ranking factor called Query Deserves Freshness which ranks new content higher. When you do linkbuilding, are they to new content? If so, that would explain some of it.

I don't agree with the CTR theory. It doesn't explain the phenomenon of sites rebounding to the top after the Google Dance (due to their relentless link building).

Well according to many of these theories we could influence our rankings simply by getting people to click / stay on site

    Any others?
