I was planning on approaching people in the same niche as me with similar websites and asking them to place a link in the footer of every page on their website back to my site. In return i would do the same.
I was planning on doing this with say 5 or 6 high quality sites that would agree to it (my site is also high quality with lots of good content). All links would be ********.

Is this likely to improve my rankings in the SERP's?

What are peoples opinions of such a practice, do you find that the websites just remove your link after a while and don't tell you?

Is this a good idea or a bad idea?

Yeah i find high pr link exchanges do work in increasing ranking, however might be wise to try and get links from someone with relatively related content but not specifically in your niche. Obviously still look for High PR and quality sites. If you link exchange within your niche your competitors might outrank you. A undesired effect of a link exchange.

Recirprocal links in the footer? Bad idea.

Why are reciprocal links in the footer a bad idea? Is it better or worse to have them in the footer of the homepage or have them in the footer of the homepage AND every page on the site.

The thing is my site is a PR4 site and i would only be willing to link to (and have links from) sites of PR4 and higher. I thought maybe with high quality sites like this it would be a good idea. No?

Google doesn't like reciprocal links anywhere. They get completely discounted in my experience. And don't try a link circle either. It's smart enough to figure that out. Google likes one way links.
