I've got a site with some pr3 and pr2 pages and I've been experimenting with getting newly published content with no page rank - ranked at the top of google for specific keywords. I found that within 8 hours I was able to rank at the top of the SERPS for reasonably competitive keyphrases within my niche, even beating sites with higher pr etc.

I just wondered if any of the google seo gurus knew why my pages were going straight to the top? They're still there now, a whole week later.

Please also state your number 1 most important SEO tip for webmasters to bare in mind when trying to rank in google.

    Thanks.

Unique content tied to high PR (5+) niche-specific backlinks.

this is called new content boost , which is a temporary ranking boost given by google to new and fresh content ,overtime your ranking will decline and settle to a fixed place (2nd or 3rd page maybe)
i would advice to keep building backlinks to that individual page so that it ranks based on back links and not bcoz new content boost which wont last for longer period

My biggest tip is don't be scared of google. Don't let them convince you aka claiming sites will be banned from blog comments. They try to be the government or police of the internet and make all the rules like what you should and shouldn't do.

Exactly. For example Google said awhile back "we hate link exchanges, if you do them we'll sandbox you". Recently they changed it to "we hate excessive link exchanges, we'll sandbox you"

Don't listen to Google, listen to the results.

Rich content and good backlinks keeps google high as the sky. Google don't like come downs or od'ing on too much overdone seo goodness.

ToyRobot i've also experienced this. I have created 2 blogs with the same niche, each one of them focused on different keyword. the two blogs where at the top of the SERPs for 1 month. Then I made my experiment, I stopped writing content on my 2nd blog (no PR)(only 3 backlinks so far)with only 14 post and continue writing on my 1st blog(PR1)(only 5 backlinks so far), now having 48 post. But when I write the contents on those two blogs, theres one thing that I don't forget to do, PUT THE KEYWORD ON EVERY POST.What happen then is that the 1st blog now stayed on the #15 spot of the SERPs with 22,100,000 search results and the 2nd blog happens to be on the #4 spot of the SERPs with 8,540,000 search results.

If you can get high pr backlinks that is good, but don't just go for niche backlinks, get as many backlinks as possible. All backlinks help to rank. (unless they are nofollowed)

You don't want your visitors to actually be distracted by them/click on them as opposed to clicking on something else that could make you money.
