I was going to ask the same question. I find google keyword planner have very different result than the old google keyword tool. It shows so much lesser searches per month compared to the old ones.

Do you know the reason behind this?

maybe it's more accurate... i also think it shows [exact] searches per month by default (no need to set it up that way)

Yeap, that's right. Keyword Planner shows the exact number of monthly searches, while Google keyword tool was set by default to show the broad/approximate number of monthly searches. Another option that i don't recall seeing it on keyword tool was the display of monthly searches "from google and partners" engines. To sum it up, imho Keyword Planner is a better and improved version of Keyword Tool and, combined with Google Trends, delivers a deadly combinations for finding targeted niches. All you have to do after identifying a handful of niches is to check the overall competition and start working on the best niches from your selection :)

I find Keyword Planner must easier to use, now I have practiced with it a bit. Log into your adwords account to access it. It defaults to exact searches, but will also take you through a lot of related search terms, making it easier to find long tail keywords.

I agree with this point.... Keyword planner does good and easy to use... The difference is Keyword tool supported SEO, whereas Keyword Planner supporting PPC.
