So we have come across a lot of marketers making their courses for free due to the pandemic

    for instance

digitalmarketer and others offering their course content for free for a month
landing page, run ads, provide videos/images, etc for free consultants opening their calendar for free mini-coaching agencies offering to help build la sessions
software companies removing their limitations of their free plans

curious about how this will play into their current positioning as well as into their positioning once things start to stabilize again.

Is this setting them up as an authority in their market because of their generosity ?
Will they just get flooded with moochers who will not be able to afford their services regardless?
Will they come out of all of this in a lower position because of the price shock of when they go back to regular pricing?

From what I see, if you are a brand, then putting all your stuff on sale like this will attract a lower quality buyer (one which the brand isnt familiar with atm) and could alienate your regular buyers because they feel the calue of the brand deminishing. On the other had, being charitable can help the perception of the brand.

I feel left in a vicious cycle of whether this helps or not.

Depends from what point you look at it I guess.

    As a consumer, I couldn't be happier.

Some out of the kindness of their hearts, some as a business move cause “free shit” gets shared all over the Internet (especially free shit that used to cost $999).

Nothing is free, in most cases you gotta provide email address. They're just using situation to build their lists.

In other cases, they'll try to persuade you to buy something during the free course.

We did that with our Instagram authority course too :D

Anyway, nothing wrong with it, as long as you get something useful from the course.
