It allows you to find out ALL the backlinks for a website i.e. doesn't stop at 1000

There is an application and I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it!!

It cannot scrape more than 1000 backlinks. You can try xrumer or webceo (the paid version) to get more than 1000 blacklinks for a site. most of the time though, you won't need more than that to outrank your competitior. just because they have lots of backlinks, doesn't mean they're good ones.

I fully understand that but it's more for me to analyse the type of backlinks that they have rather than replicate them.

    I'm using SEO Spyglass and i think it's a great tool ,
basically what it does is search for your backlinks in many search engines and I think also in RSS directories (not sure about that), then the spyglass visits every link found and tells you the anchor text, whether it's alive or not , what's the PR , IP , domain age etc.

you can download from link-assistant site a fully functional trial version for 30 days (except for saving projects) . you should give it a try

scrape box can only get 1000 per url but if a site has banklinks to multiple urls you can get alot. I just got 46000 backlinks from an authortiy website that had over 1300 pages (urls)

MagesticSEO is the best solution here. Most of the softwares listed here collect data from Yahoo site explorer. Although not bad, it will only give you 1000 results at max. Also, they are retiring Yahoo site explorer backlink analysis feature pretty soon, and as such all these tools will not work anymore. MagesticSEO have their own bots set up that crawls the web, and hence are able to give you list of all of the backlinks a site has
