So what kind of numbers on monthly searches are you looking at to make you want to invest on a keyword?

    Depends on kw earning potential.

No point in ranking if you ain't earning.

100+ in my eyes. You can always find low hanging fruit that can be great for finding fresh sales

Mate, it depends on your business and the keywords you want to choose to earn money. There are lots of keywords with low search volume but with great potential in rare niche. There is no fix Thumb Rule.

That actually depends on the keyword as well as your way of monetizing. If there is a keyword with a search volume of 200 per month but 20 out of them are buyers then go for it. If however you want to monetize by the volume of impressions of ads then I would suggest no less than 5000 monthly searches.

There is no exact answers for your question,

You have to think about the competition before investing.

If you choose the keyword which is having high search volume, but not able to rank in top means there is no point of choosing the keyword.

So choose the best one which you can rank in top 3

That really depends. Let's say you're working for a dentist. 100 searches/month for dental implants is still better than 200 searches for teeth whitening. You need to think about the value of the keyword. If you're talking about affiliate, I try to go after 500+ searches/month at least.

Well it hardly depends on the commercial interest of the keyword.

"bus ticket from new hampshire to tennessee" certainly won't get a lot of traffic, but it can bring a lot of conversion. It's a long tail keyword with a highly commercial purpose. Furthermore it's probably easy to rank.

Also like to add on. If it's an affiliate keyword (such as Amazon) and let's say your looking at best treadmills 2018 which has virtually no monthly searches. But this will dramatically increase. Also think about seasonal keywords. These usually may have hardly any searches off season but searches go through the roof during peak season.

I usually target 50. If I rank in the first spot, other long tail keywords would also rank in the first, bringing in more sales (Affiliate commissions).
