Seems like every other person in the in the IM industry is currently running a PBN network, to rank themselves. Most of the people are using expired domains to build their network but how long is this method going to work? People are spending thousands, do you think PBN's will sustain for a while or will go down?

A PBN is just a group of websites that eventually link to your site. Imagine a site like cosmopolitan, one of the top magazines for women. There are a shit ton of reader that create blogs and refer to them in ways like "And btw, check what they said last time in cosmopolitan".

PBNs will never die, not a chance, its just people talking about a site.

Only way I see it being trashed if Google decides to wipe out any SEO value once a domain drops or expires.

Even then, you can always reg a new domain and build links to it, eventually linking to your money site.

Google can definitely devalue those links in future, but we never know when will that happen, maybe in a month, a year.

The only way PBN's are vulnerable is if your network is identified, and de-valued as a link source.
Otherwise, your 'PBN' is just a bunch of individual and non-connected websites, each carrying quite some authority, and transferring that to the sites to which they link.

Even if Google were somehow able to go through and detect and de-index every single blog network that is out there right now, new ones would still pop back up tomorrow. So, it will always be a game of cat and mouse. The more likely scenario is that say Google does deindex some of the private blog network. They will then immediately go out and create new blogs or change their strategies. So, the private blog networks will continue to evolve as search engines evolve.

I think everyone give Google entirely too much credit. 99% of the blog networks that were shut down were advertised on websites like this and made public blog networks. And if a lot of people are using a network eventually its going to get found out. The key to a private blog network is to keep it PRIVATE and not sell links on it. Also, don't create links to your one money site on every site in your network every time, its really about patterns. Your not going to outsmart Google so don't try to over think the process. Build a PBN, link to your money site, add more domains to your PBN as your income allows.

I think PBNs will continue to work like they always did. Just like blog networks do. The only thing google could do for now is actually de-index those domains.

This.
Only way it gets shut down is if you leave footprints and/or you don't have a diverse backlink profile.

PBN will last long for sure, and no need to spend thousands, you can build a good PBN site for $25 including a year of hosting.
