Why do so many horse racing fans consider the Kentucky Derby to be the best horse race in the world, when in reality its a joke compared to the Dubai World Cup and more of a qualifier for the bigger races? The purse at the Dubai World Cup is 10x larger then the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky derby is decadent and depraved.

It's the same thing as to why winning purses in golf are strangely low(The Masters entire prize fund was $8 million), and most athletes make most of their money through advertisements. Been this way since...2000+BC? Ancient athletes had billboards and advertisements like Nike(a Greek Goddess of victory) would today. Sportsmanship is what it's called, I think.

To address this directly, I dunno, how do we compare a race started in 1875 and in 1996?

It's funny how, although the US is usually the one accused of being all about money and nothing about substance, Dubai has openly taken that mantle in full force. Because the US is getting older and joining the aged club of historical world powers, suddenly the US is treated as though it's no longer new or fresh, hip or cool, but needs to step its game up because it's acting like cheap, old, washed-up, has-beens. We'll see Dubai at the Olympics, they can keep their $10 million horse races.

It's not about the prize money, it's about having a wonderful time and the prize money be damned. $2 million in Kentucky, it could have been $1 Dollar and it would have more significance than the Dubai Whatever Race.

edit: changed post before I submitted it, omitting 2 huge part: Gambling on a scale you wouldn't want to imagine. Gambling about anything and everything. I think the Derby might be the most gambled, money-exchanged, event. Secondly, it's the South's Spring Bacchanalia

Even in the U.S. the Breeders Cup is a much bigger event, yet it seems more trendy to watch the Kentucky Derby. And everyone does so much stereotypes with it, like all the women do the crazy hats cause its a southern thing, and all the men are drinking Mint Juleps.

Because more than to watch horses race the Derby is more of a Social Event, is the place to be and be seen if you're somebody.

Also is the first race of the "Triple Crown" series.

The appeal of the Kentucky Derby is that it is a part of American history. It's a big deal to many Americans for that reason. We enjoy watching it. Personally, I think many of the hats are beautiful and enjoy looking at them. The money aspect isn't where the appeal is. It's not trendy; it's historical. 139 years old is not trendy. I know nothing about the Dubai horse races or whatever it is called. Doesn't appeal to me and I have no interest in following it.

No one in America cares which is bigger, where the higher prizes are, etc. We love our Kentucky Derby just the way it is.

I just think it needs to be upgraded to the modern world, and increase its purse. For starters they could become the first major horse event in the world to use robots instead of human jockeys. Currently its only done in the camel racing industry

Its not about the prizemoney. Its the prestige of winning the race. Generally winners of the main (kentucky Epsom and Irish ) derbies retire to stud at the end of their 3 year old careers. The huge stud fees that the winner of these races can generate means they no longer have to prove themselves after their 3yo career is done. The other races are generally open to older horse as wel as younger ones. So a good horse can have a few chandes at winning them, where as they only have one chance to win the derby..

This means the cream of the crop are prepared for the race from the time they are born. Its very cheap tp enter and they mist also be entered before their first birthday, So generally every thourighbred horse is entered, Its only as the race gets closer do they need to extra entry fees which raise at each stage. This method gernerally weeds out all but the top horses.

It also a matter of record, Derby winners gerneraly have a higher % of winnong off spring

A stallion with a blue riband like the derby, can generally demand top stud fees. In comparison to this the $15 million prize fund is small change.

I hope this explains a bit of the allure of the Derby and its importance to the horse racing industry.

I forgot about the stud fee's I was reading somewhere, where an ounce of horse sperm was worth like $250,000 or some crazy amount like that for one of the top ranked horses.

Im surpised there hasn't been any Female "stud" horses in the Racing Industry anywhere in the world yet. The following would be perfect for the industry

So the key to making money in Kentucky is to design a sport that goes around in a giant circle or oval shape?
