Whats the best way to test out a niche to see if it's worth
pursing without buying a domain name for it.

I'm a newbie that has some really good long tail keywords that
gets a lot of searches without much competition in the results.

    I've heard blogger-hubpages & squidoo work best.

Is there much difference in regards to SEO for having a keyword in a domian like www.keyword.com in comparison to a keyword in a subdomain e.g. www.xxxx.keyword?

If you want to test out and don't want to shell out $$$ for domains, then use blogger or squidoo. Write a couple of good articles peppered with those keywords and submit them to the article directories. At the same time, write a few for the Press Release directories as well. Use one of the free site meters to track your stats and see how things go along.

Easiest, but kind of inaccurate way in some instances is to find long-tail kw's and then research how many advertisers are running ppc around terms that have decent traffic...

Say you get 600 search/month against a niche with only 100k results without "quotes" and you see 70 competitors running ppc in google...you get the idea...but markets/competitors are different so do you due research to determine the actual effort you must put in...

This is very free 'method' but also elementary...

You can do what other people suggested, just remember that if you get free sites like hubs, lenses, etc. but only do 2 articles you will never see how well the performance of a certain niche will do unless you really dig into it...

But that's the basic method you'll get started on...Or, you can find or invest in softwarez/services that will help you with the market research or invest money into ppc to test the waters and conversion rates before you jump in and start investing time' vs money...usually it's much easier to earn back $ than it is to earn back time if you know what I mean :) ...

It would be much faster and easier to test a niche by running a PPC campaign.

It sounds like I should build a site with all three & I suppose link them all
    together.

Of the three which one is best for being like the anchor or hub for all them.

How about social bookmarking, which sites should I concentrate on
when I do some social bookmarking & rss, digg stumbleupon.

This is a great thread and please continue it...

These are fundamental questions which should be the basis for any niche testing, anyone with experience which im sure there are bazillions please let us know what trick of the trade you report to be working?

Bookmarking the S2 sites (hub, squidoo, etc.) after placing maybe 3 postes based on target keywords seems to work for me. use social poster and vary inbound links and ID if possible.

Roboform can save a great deal of time - or go after BMD, although i havent been impressed with BMD to be honest, onlywire sucks too in my opinion.

    anyone?

To my knowledge any subdomains do not get associated to the main domain, so any PR will or backlinks to the main domain doesnt seem to make any difference.

I could be wrong ofcourse since many sites like blogger seem to get indexed and ranked higher, interesting topic though and id like to see a pro comment on that?

google has a 'secret' prefrence with sites and the way they rank them....
    tip 1:
squidoo and blogger and hub pages both rank really high in google for long tail words even if you have crap content and have only just opened it... (okay it needs to be decent and have some backlinks etc) but for words with less competition you will notice that you appear on the 1st or 2nd page (or just in the top 5) shortly after creating the site... free seo traffic rules :p

    tip 2..
link all of these together (squidoo blogger and hub pages) then you have a site with high quality one way or 2 way links (1 way is of course better).... and so both generate more traffic but also get a higher ranking on google.
but make sure each site is different as remember real people are going to be visiting each one or at least two and so dont want to be sent to the same content again.

    tip 3...
everytime i write tips i allways feel the need to write 3 tips :p stupid education system but heres the final one
submit your best articles to ezine first.... then once its accepted submit to other sites but remember to change it each time slightly as a unique or partly unique article performs 2000% better than a copy one trust me and you may get more webmasters who use your content too. (if this happens you hit an instant gold mine as you have a 20 min job turning into an article that is apearing on other sites that you dont even need to get traffic for and traffic = cash)

i offer paid mentoring at $30 an hour for this kind of stuff and ive been doing this sort of research for a while and have read loads and loads of ebooks and made a load of cash from it but am not a bragging sorta person so its pritty cool... but $30 an hour will be an hour just talking to you and is nothing really for most people (can be cheaper if you buy your hours in bulk but payment via paypal) ebook also available soon

Great post levi & djlest I was thinking of doing the same thing.

levi I have no problem with mentoring at $30 an hour, but right now
I'm laid off from my job.

    In which order should I build the blogs 1.blogger 2.hubpages 3.squidoo I have a
website that's going to be the hub.

Should I then use social poster to bookmark each one right after I build it.

How would I create one way links, link blogger to my hubpage then the hubpage
to squidoo that part is a little confusing.

I have a review site that's a website & not a blog, can I put some stumbleupon, digg buttons on the site to allow them to bookmark it.

A newbie who mentors interesting. My advice don't pay for mentoring not when there is loads of information here for free. :)

me a newbie.... i highly doubt it
    5 years of internet experience
first website made me $1000 in its first month and $500 in its second month
1 years of affiliate marketing research and experience under my belt...

just because i dont boast about my earnings or stick with the same thing (i like exploring new methods of making money online so i dont get too bored with the same thing and also i like experimenting).

Alot of information is given away for free but then (cant remember who it is) but whoever has that ********** site charges for mentoring.... im just offering 1 on 1 mentoring instead of group... i could easily give group mentoring but wouldnt be as good as 1 on 1

anyhow mentoring can really help some people to get started and give them good ideas and twists on what they have read etc and answers direct questions.... i wouldnt offer it if i wasnt able to do it.

blogging2357 you can build them in any order.... but choose a main one (i suggest squidoo) and then place links on the other sites to the squidoo lense (and the squidoo lense can be your main pre sale page.... or you could link them all together and each can be different things... its up to you really and both will work fine

I have a question for the seo guru's, basically i have found a long tail keyword in which the top sites are high authority with page ranks over 3, huge amounts of domain backlinks, etc. However these sites aint really optimized around that keyword, and dont have many page backlinks. So if i created a site, seo optimised for my keyword, and quite a bit of page backlinks, can i expect to pass these high authority competitors?

you can check by searching google, see if there are many sites within your niche, and see if they get much traffic.

Do a search in google Keyword + forum

if you can find a forum (or 2) with 10k or more you've got gold
