I intend to build a huge blog farm on my server (without inter-linking), I need to know if there is a decent tool for administrating multiple wp blogs on the same server.

It really depends what you mean by administering?

There are quite a few methods you can use to make your blog management easier without resorting to additional tools and layers of abstraction.

What exactly are you trying to achieve easily? Post? Manage ads? Install?
Give a few more details and I'll make suggestions.

I am currently looking to install about 1000 wp blogs with about 3-5 pages and I want to be able to mass install them with themes and some plugins.

The ability to mass update them with plugins is required as well. I will also like to add some adserver code to the logs enmasse as well after they are up and running.

    Any suggestions

    Os....

    Hi there

There are a couple of easy ways of doing this in a way that does not require custom software.

You can easily create a 'template' installation, with all the plugins already installed, and then easily copy that across to all your site installations.

Same thing with the adsense. I would advise running something like openX. Each blog would then be pulling the 'advert' from openX. This means that you have one place, and only one place to manage all your blog ads.

You can set it up to deliver the same adsense code to all your blogs, or to have each blog receive a custom advert/adsense.

Regarding the mass updating ... it depends.

If all your blogs are running on one server, it is quite trivial to have all of them running off one codebase. With such a setup, updating the plugins on this one codebase means updating all the blogs. You can set this up yourself, or (I think) wp-hive is free and offers the same sort of functionality.

One of the best ways for managing posting across a blog farm, is to enable the Email-to-Post function in WP. So, to post to a blog, you just send an email. Much easier to send 1'000 emails than it is to login 1'000 times to make posts.

As you can see from my posts, I have been thinking about this a bit, and trying to come up with a solution that will not lock me into any vendor over and above the native wordpress ... just less problems down the line, and ensures that all plugins and upgrade will work right out of the box.

wp hive looks like old and un-updated plugin. october 2009.
I think I will chose cPanel and wpdesktop for the mass install of blogs and will purchase a custom poster for mass posting.

Don't write off a plugin just because it seems un-updated. Sometimes the damned thing is complete, works fine and requires no further work. Like I said, what it allows you to do is run multiple wordpress sites using one code base. Each site retains its own database. One of the chief advantages of this, is you only need to upgrade one set of plugins/themes/files, and all the sites sharing that codebase are updated ... YMMV

can wp-hive be used on multiple servers? i was reading that maybe its possible to install on remote server but still use 1 main dbase? also what is a good management system if u have 1000 email to post blogs? how to manage and update them by email other than a spreadsheet. How about auto rss feeding them?

This is where your particular setup kicks in. There are so many alternatives, it is difficult to cover them all in one response, as I hinted in my first question to the OP.

For example, in some instances, it is makes sense to email to the blogs. Managing it is simple with any email client that autocompletes email addresses. For example, I could set my email addresses for the blogs to be
    452ad54KGJHF_blog1_com@emailserver.com
    FDADFA90xklT_blog2_com@emailserver.com
    etc etc etc ...

any email client that autocompletes would just need me to type the blog1 or blog2 and it fills the rest of the address. The rest of the address is random enough to be secure for most intents and purposes.

Another alternative, as you point out, is to use RSS to post to the blogs. You could use a MotherShip blog where you publish all your articles, and use tags or categories in the RSS feed for each blog pick which articles *it* publishes. The headache here, is maintaining 1000 categories or tags.

Yet another option, is to use a cron job to put the 'articles' in a folder, with a WP plugin that publishes whatever is in the folder ...

It all depends on your requirements, your blog farm setup, and also how you plan to use, update and generally manage the sites.
