    Hey blackhatters

I need some input from you guys who have forums or are otherwise in the know.

In your opinion whats the best free forum script and why?

Taking into account availability and ease of use of plugins, templates etc.

phpBB3- quite good, but still has a few minor issues. the newest version is quite slick as it supports table-less templates. also has the most templates of any of the GPL forums. massive amount of plugins. bridge plugin to integrate with Joomla

Simple Machines- seems to be the most 'invasion' proof, and is very fast and stable. not enough templates, but what is available is good. bonus is that it can be linked (bridged) onto a Joomla install using Community Builder (only important if you know what these are;))

FireBoard (Joomla only)- while a bit quirky? it hooks into Joomla well as it is designed for Joomla.

BBPress (WordPress only)- basic, but may be of interest as it can attach to a WPress install.

looking forward to what the rest of the 'gang' posts!

    R-

PHPBB3 is the best hands down imo. I love the fact that it has tons of mods/support (im suck with code/programing). So very noob friendly for me.

I also tried Simple Machines which I found adequate but I still prefer PHPBB.

As has been said, phpbb2 was quite well know for it's 'holes' but phpbb3 has addressed the majority of them and is fine to use. I would always install the captcha and question mods to thwart the bots though too.

Voted SMF. Why? Nice, easy to use, stylish, has a few nice theme resources, very secure. SMF is a really nice script. Preffered over phpBB. If I had to chose a paid script, I would go for IPB it's really nice too but it just ain't free.

I voted SMF as well, it has something called a package manger which makes it very easy to install templates and extensions, and version 2 is coming out really soon.

yes but they have bridges for forum scripts.
    think thats the better solution
right, thats a lovely little script. based on wp, which is awesome.
but you don't want to use it when you are looking for a solid forum script.

    i would vote for phpbb..

SMF is the way to go. I've been using it for years and love it. It has plenty of mods and themes and the support forum is excellent.
