So I have an emd that is my brand name and primary ranking keyword. I was looking at few websites anchor text distribution for their brand name and it seems to vary from 10% to 40%. Is 40% safe these days? My links are all white hat.

Try not to use just brand anchor text too though they are relatively safe. Use brand.com, www.brand.com, brand etc. just for variation. Then you can bump it a bit up if it does not have too much competition and is pure brand. Also include some view here, click, click here etc. stuff in the non-brand anchor texts.
