I am just building a wordpress authority site that is quite heavy on the images, if I do not optimise it that much with pretty much only jetpack for the can it loads under 2 seconds but I get a lousy score on pagespeed of around 50, if I then optimise switch off jetpack and then activate W3 Total Cache and some other things I can get my pagespeed up to about 82 but the load time slows down to 3-4 seconds (no idea why).

As I am trying to rank for google, I was trying to work out what the better route is. I know page load times only make up a small percentage of how google ranks a site, but I am just trying to work out which is better.

I don't think page load time only makeup small percentage in Google.

Because rather than crawlers users would visit your site, if users use your site it takes long time to page load, they willn't impress by this load speed.

So try to improve the page load speed.. Optimise your images with good quality..

I think page speed is really a minor ranking factor but we are doing search engine optimization right ?

So, first I thought page speed was directly linked to TTFB (first page load time) because it's the first thing which help the bot to crawl your content faster. BUT

1/ Google doesn't only crawl your main content, it crawls everything (including javascript, images, ...), and it also interpret js, so it can get a big picture of your website load time.
2/ Google design ranking factor to make user experience better (not its own crawling experience), what if your first page load in 2 ms, but the whole content (dependencies, images) take hours to load, while this time, user content is unavailable => bad user experience.

So I think you should improve everything on your website, scripts minification, images optimization and oll the other best practice. Do not focus only on caching and TTFB.

Probably the simple answer is that actual load time is more important - if the site is slow it wont get crawled well and also more importantly if the site is slow users will leave.
Having said that its better to try and get to the bottom of both problems :)
