I'm considering making a small PBN for my businesses, which are all in the same niche.
I've been looking through expired domains lately and...

I've found some niche-relevant ones in my price range, but their metrics aren't too great.
Usually something like DA 15-20, PA 25-30, PR 0-1.

I've found domains with much better metrics, only they aren't really relevant to my niche.
    eg. DA 25-35, PA 25-45, PR 1-3.

Which route would you take - strong metrics or relevance? Or a mix of both?

Relevance should be the most important factor of your list with average metrics, not the opposite. Make sure to properly analyze the backlinks as metrics can easily be manipulated, and don't even count PR as a metric as it's outdated. Just a general tip, don't fall for metrics - just like your username, the backlinks should be of quality and not irrelevant foreign links.

You should be able to find an average domain in $20-$30 range including renewal fee/privacy.

Relevance, most the metrics out there are way off from how Google actually views a site anyway. Make a highly relevant PBN site with A+ content and you have a good start.

IMHO general sites should have at least PR5 and DA over 60 to make it work. Otherwise relevant domains work better.

Great tip, thank you! I doubt I'll find any that good that are in my price range, so I'll just stick to industry-relevant domains for now.

Definitely glad I checked with BHW first :D so I didn't waste my time/money on the non-relevant sites.

Something that no one has touched on here is manual reviews. If you have a ton of unrelated websites pointing to your money site its going to look way more suspicious than lots of related websites...

My choice is mix of both metrics and relevance. Because its a safe method.

I'm shocked people say relevance. If you repurpose the domain and put contextual links with good content from your niche, you're going to see the biggest movement IMHO.

I have got great results with shitty metrics and irrelevant domains. I would say look for domains with strong backlinks. Some times, backlinks may not mean strong metrics especially when the domain is expired. Being a service provider myself, I have seen guys buying articles to rank a car rental business using a domain from politics niche. Basically, your PBN domain must have strong backlinks and should be safe guarded well from crawlers and competition.

    This is a no brainer.

Metrics over relevance all day long.

Metrics/links for sure! I would never judge a domain by his metrics without checking the links first though.

I would say first option is good enough for PBN's. Good luck!

All metrics are shit if you don't know how to interpret them (90%+ of SEO's don't know). Making sure that domains have many high TF backlinks pointing at them is the main thing. 50+ Referring domains, 10+ backlinks with 15+TF are usually good to go.
