    Hi,

I have a corporate website that provides IT solutions so I need to appear white hat and completely legit not only to Google but also to clients. What's a good amount of back links to acquire and still look legit. Does it even matter? are there any ways round it? i dont want one of my competitors to get pissed and report the site to the big G. Is that possible.

    e.g.
    Profile links 200
    blog comments 500
    etc etc

    Thanks in advance.

whitehat is pretty much everything comes so natural. I mean ur backlinks are related to your websites. and of course links come from other users. Not like you are doing it yourself with blasts and sh!t. And you dont require of automated software to help get SERPs.

    That's my own opinion.

If you wonna be a good boy you will most likely not succeed, If you will brake the rules you will not succeed also, but if you will stay close to the limits that is when you will be successful.

Yes people can report you through google and if you are braking google's quality guidelines (www(.)google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769) your ranks will drop drastically or you will be off the google completely.

I would not automate anything with whitehat site. Post to blogs that have high PR at leas 3 and Alexa Rank no higher than 200k. Comments have to be related to the topic of the blog's page and not just "Thanks cool post!!!"

Do press releases, don't go crazy on profiles I would recommend total of 50 highest ranking ones and that is all no more profiles.

If you have money get link in yahoo directory. Try to get link from DMOZ directory. And few other High Ranking directories.

Generate as much unique content as you can. It will also generate natural links.

If your website is very new do not expect it to rank very high for competitive keywords in google for fist at least 2 years.

Not gonna work. It may even most likely decrease the rankings of the whitehat site. Because ether google will detect the strategy, if not then the linking websites will start sending negative impact (yes backlinks from spammed or bad trust website will affect your rankings in a negative way) because they are spammed out by spammy incoming links.

The techniques which does not violate search engine's guidelines are white hat techniques. I would advise you to read this Google's guidelines,
    http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769

And keep one thing in mind, every search engine has its own set of guidelines, no doubt many of guidelines are similar.
