So I have two link pyramid concepts for my blog dependent on what I'm linking to the most. In one concept I'm focusing more on the blog itself while on the other I'm focusing more on the first 3 months of posts (to be gradually replaced by later months as those get more backlinks). My question is which one works best? Has anyone ever tried linking ONLY to deep links or ONLY to the main page before?

IMO the best is to do both, with both. Let me explain...

Linking to your homepage is standard stuff, so that's fine, link to it. ( i won't go into techniques as you already have concepts in mind)

Link to your pages should be done as well (deep linking). You can also use internal interlinking to pass on page rank and link juice.

E.g. link to wwwdotyourhomepagedotcom as normal. You can then link to wwwdotyourhomepagedotcom/keyword1 from say a web 2.0 using "keyword1" as your anchor text inside the content of your web 2.0 article. You can then have a link inside the content of wwwdotyourhomepagedotcom/keyword1 using "keyword1" or an LSI/related keyword that links to your homepage, or another inner page that is RELEVANT to that keyword.

Hope that makes sense to you (as in my head it does lol)...

There really aren't "sites" currently to prevent one site from ranking for a bunch of keywords based solely on the domain's PR, and so we have individual pages with PR.

Just think of the domain as another page, don't separate the two; you're always linking to pages that way. Keeps things easy to think about and work with.
