What's better .com or country specific domain

I am planning to launch a niche website which is not for US, the .com for my keyword is not available and country specific TLD is available other than .net & .org. I m not sure to go for .net/.org / country TLD.

For example If I am planning the site for NewZeland Keyword.com is not available, but keyword.net, keyword.org & keyword.co.nz is available, what should I buy,

Does country specific TLD have any advantage in seo for that particular country results.

Appearantly the local TLD's seem to be slightly favoured when local results are searched for. It also depends on where the search takes place of course. That's my experience anyway.

Off course I am talking about local search, that is where i am targeting.
 
Server location is much more important than TLD.

If you host on hostgator you have just defined that!


It seems since you asked the question you did you might need a little more explaining. If you pick a usa company & host there then you are not using foreign hosting to host the foreign name.

You are looking for hosting in a certain country or a hosting company that has Class-C IPs available in the country of your choice.

big-G "unique class-c ip hosting" OR "hosting in {the country of your choice}"
 
server location and local TLD, both are important (i also believe server location is more important), but you can also use google webmasters to set the geo target preference, this worked very well with some of my sites within only a few weeks after i changed it
 
If you're concerned about Google SEO, can also set country in google webmaster tools - not as good as server / TLD, however helpful for existing domains.

As well, google claims that they're now able to notice things such as a country specific subdomain (ie jp.domainname.com being specific to japan)

Once again, server / TLD likely much more effective
 
as your plan is to mainly target your local market I highly suggest a local domain. From my experience a local TLD will out rank any other TLD on there local google search engine.

However as mentioned server location is important not so much for its geographic location but its ping. Google has confirmed server speed is a ranking factor

You`re talking BS and spreading bad information. You`re just quoting google. As we all know google is soooo honest.

Server location is not important because of it`s ping. I know some awful slow sites that rank great because of server location (almost no seo).
 
Well all we have to go on are assumptions like yours is unless google confirms it to back up the theory into reality.

So in my case my comment is backed up with facts

TLDs dont matter as far as i know. The reason why you often see .co.uk domains rank well in Google UK results is because those .co.uk domains are also using UK-based servers. Same case applies to any other local results. Means when your server is located in one country, then that's an important factor for its local SEO results. However, as I told earlier, usually someone who use local server would also prefer to use that country specific domain.

It is very clear you never SEOd a site before. If you did, then you`d know g00gle talks shit and if you believe it, you`re it`s bitch.

Google will never give anyone it`s ranking algo.

CCTLDs do make a difference, so does server location - if you a have a CCTLD such as a co.uk and login to webmaster tools it says "Your site's domain is currently associated with the target: United Kingdom" and you cannot change it whereas with a TLD you don't have to associate it with a certain country - there would be no point in google telling us that a site is associated with a country and not let us change this if it has no affect on rankings - CCTLDs rank better than TLDs in local search, server location is also a bonus as you had said.
 
I think it depends on the country. In Japan Japanese is the main language so a lot of people there use .jp and it works because of the language barrier. If they see .jp they are expecting Japanese language content which they want. .com could be anything so they may be reluctant to go.
