Let me tell you my story,

    two thoughts :

one - i read somewhere that anyone who has access to yoast SEO plugin can get them to first page of google and simply make money but they have to do all those content things themselves and i thought those meta tags are created automatically and that is called as search engine optimization, this all happened when i was 16, 4 years back. and i spent exactly "zero" in any of these things as i was not the earning member in my family and i was not excited about it at that time.

two - i used to think that google first does all the searches by itself and then takes a screenshot or like saving webpage and then it serves to anybody who is looking for results for that exact term.

I seriously laugh at myself when i think about how i used to think about how it works. i seriously didn't knew about "backlinks" concept and this concept is so logical just like a new person searching for another person(but he does know only features nothing exact) in a new village he enters , a person from that village being the search engine looks for the query which the new person is asking about and then he thinks about that one who has got highest reputation and coincides with searchers query and then he delivers his most closest result to that new person, here reputation works just like good backlink profile for that paricular query anchor text. see how amazing it is.

and how you all used to think about how google works before you knew about seo ?

Well, I couldn't make assumptions about SEO before I knew what it was because I didn't know it existed.

Back when I only knew the definition of SEO, I actually thought it was this intricate system of formulas that I had to use in order to get the optimal keyword keyword density in order to increase my chances of ranking a website. When I learnt of the existence of off-page SEO, I also assumed that it was an intricate set of formulas used to determine the exact number of backlinks and the quality of backlinks that needed to be built in tiers.

Been into SEO for as long as I can remember, but before I found Bhw I used to consider SEO to basically just be exchanging links with other sites :)

I remember finding Bhw and just thinking - wow I don't know shit!

It was back in the 2006 (or was it in '07?), when I was asked to write articles on the topic of SEO! I had no idea of what I was going to write about SEO, and that too some 6-7 articles to begin with, and about 700~1,000 words each! At that time, Google helped me a lot, and the client was happy that the articles turned out to be technically correct and they were received well by the site's community as well as its visitors! That client's faith in my ability to do research built up my confidence tremendously, and it also put me on the track to learning more about the various aspects of SEO. The same client "pushed" me into writing about web-hosting also!

In fact, I wasn't even interested in the topics before that time, but it turned out that the client who pushed me into it despite my unwillingness (due to the fear of failing associated with the unknown territory of SEO and web-hosting), those 2 topics provided me bread and butter for more than 4 years after that, and until my illness in 2011-12, which compelled me to stop writing entirely for almost 2 years then! It was impossible for me then to write with steady hands -- they also hurt a lot, and the mind too was getting fatigued very easily, and so the writing career had to end then, sadly.

But it was SEO that began a steady and a well-paying writing career for me when I really wanted to begin some serious and steady online work as a freelancer!

I've learnt that commonsense really does matter. Agree, with the comment above about the "only doing it manually" crowd...rubbish they are! Go into this biz, for the long-term and planet's there for the taking, because a lot of folks speak "hit-n-run" nonsense!
