What would you need for a social network type website?

I'm talking about servers/everything else.
How much would you be looking at for starting off, considering your going to be small when you start off

When you start off, I think you can go with shared hosting. The only special things you will need are databases that will work with the coding language that you or your developers are using. Some languages like .Net require Windows based hosting. Just look into that.

However, once your site becomes popular and starts to take off, you must be prepared to move to a VPS or a dedicated server as hosting companies will invariably send you a mail stating that your site is a burden for the shared network.

I had a quick read over that, which lists some software that's useful, but would It be better to use something like "socialengine" when starting out? (I'm only considering this, because I don't know much coding, and would like to design a lot of it myself free of hassle) Or just develop the whole website from scratch by hiring dedicated devs to do it for me? (Even though the latter will be more expensive)

By the way ramsweb, do you have skype? I just have a few quick questions to ask, and don't want to have to worry about posting back and fourth on here.
Plus its good to network anyway
 
Ok, so I did abit of a research, and im looking to be spending somewhere around 5k to build the site + set up initial server costs etc (on lowest shared plan due to just starting out)
 
I am not active on Skype. Moreover, this is as much of a learning curve for me as it is for you. We could probably learn from each other although I am stretched out quite thin when it comes to workload. No offense.

Thats fine, ill keep this thread updated so others can give me some info, before I start any project
 
Well I need figures. How many members you plan to have after one month two month ... one year and so on. How many active at the same time. Is there live chat possibility? Server specs are of course depending on that. With a site up to 100K members having 1000 active at once chatting writing and stuff. A dedicated server is sufficient. If it gets bigger then you have to use at least two to put database on a different machine. If it gets even bigger then you need a highly sophisticated solution. Look at facebook. They have tons of machines running the load.
 
A new and refrahing concept. All social network sites are pretty unique and to have yours be sucessful you need to do something no one else is orr look deeper into a feature someother websites are doing.
