I have a niche site that was ranking #3 for its main keyword and been up for almost 3 years now. The site had been in top 3 for almost a year now and I did not touch it at all. Then last month all of sudden one day the site is no longer ranking in top 3 and now around #50 position. Then a few weeks later it has slipped all the way to page 14 and 15. This site has all unique content and links from various sources. It had solid rankings for such a long time and then to see it drop so far back is puzzling to me.

I can understand a few spots here and there but like 14 or 15 pages back is weird. Since I have not touched the site for so long it was not any bad links that might have triggered this. The top 10 sites are the same ones and nothing new has moved into those positions with same retail stores offering such product.

So can someone tell me what causes these drastic drop in SERPS for sites that have been ranking for a while. Not to mention I had several other sites do the same...some dropped from their #1 spot to middle of page 1 or top of page 2 and orhers further back on page 5-10. It is just weird phenomenon that all my sites getting hit at same time.

Just don't know how to go about getting them back in rankings...whether to focus on adding more content to site or start a massive backlinking campaign or both.

    Any suggestions?

Are you using wordpress in the sites? if yes, how are you using the tag pages? Are there are lot of tag pages with very thin content? Panda hates thin content. Always remember that. Too much thin content can bomb a site traffic.

I am using Wordpress for the site. I don't understand by what you mean tag pages with thin content. The way I use tags in WP is when I write a post I fill the tag box with like 5-10 keyword combinations that were used in the article. Is this the right way of doing this or do I need to adjust something for Panda update. I think G indexes a lot of pages with these tags if I recall so is that bad now? How should I do it and any changes I could make to my site on-page wise that might get it moving again to the front of the SERPs?

that is the problem i believe. download and install "all in one seo" wp plugin. Once you install it, go to the all in one seo settings page in your blog admin and check the " use noindex for tag archives " setting.

I doubt it because you have tags. Iv seen tons and tons of sites ranking #1 and on sites on the first page that use tags. Many of them dont even NOFOLLOW them. Go figure. Look at sites that use the default WP theme that comes with WP 3.x. The ugly default theme that seems to rank very high. Uses tags big time.

I am pretty sure that it will bump back up if you build some links to it. I have that happen every once in a while so I hit the site with 500-1000 fresh backlinks, mix up the sources , and then I wait a few weeks.

Low and behold it always gets back where it needs to be, adding some fresh content never hurts either.

might be because you stopped building looks which itself looks unnatural.

I am very sure if a site has lots of tags and those tag pages are indexed with very thin content, it is going to be affected sooner or later. But if you were to use tag pages, make sure that each tag page gets populated with excerpts of three of four posts over a few months. The ratio of thick content to thin content pages matter too i believe. In my niche sites, i have made sure to not generate thin content tag pages. In some niche sites, i have turned off the tag pages altogether.

But the upside is tag pages have the potential to generate a lot of traffic. I have seen it myself. but i am not ready to take that risk.

This is a very good advice!
I see also in some articles about Panda update that you have to add "nofollow" too.
In the plugin "all in one seo " it add only noindex but it's still follow:
    Code:
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow" />
What do you think, we should add nofollow too or noindex is enough??

To OP: After making noindex for the tags, try to resubmit your website in webmasters tool.
