I found an EMD keyword that has 3600 local searches, with very high advertisers competition and CPC around 1$. The thing is that when I type the keyword into google the first results come from the page that has little R next to the keyword. Does that mean that the keyword is registered trademark and I am not allowed to use it in my url or on my site?

R = Register, TM = Trade Mark, C = Copyright. All of them are different things. You don't need to stay away from R or C ones, but stay away from TM ones.

This is a good case about Realtors(r) and Realtor.
