ive been building an authority site for the past two months or so. it is mostly guides for a niche and is 100% unique.

it had been getting <100 hits per day, but slowly rising. then a few days ago. i added some social icons, including a stumbleupon button. the past two days traffic has blown up over night to about 3000 a day!

the problem, which seems to be understandably common with stumbleupon traffic, is that im getting literally 0% CTR from this on adsense links...

are there any things to do to directly monetize this traffic? or just let it be and be glad for the bump in alexa rank and possibility for free natural backlinks?

can the extremely low CTR negatively affect the adsense ads at all? getting more shitty, low CPC, ads served etc?

Has your CTR dropped below the allowed threshold?

You could try to change your layout so that more ads are in the top fold of your page and make the user scroll to see the goods, if you can find some way to encourage them to move their mouse away from the stumble button. As you may know, many stumblers hover their mouse over stubmle and just hit stumble till something grabs their attention, if you can drag that mouse away from it, then thats half the battle won.

Did you get an Alexa bump? I have a site similar to yours that gets a ton of Stumble traffic with no Alexa increase.

it has dropped about 1 million spots in alexa over the past 2 days.
but again, it is a new site that was still way undervalued...

I've experimented with stumble upon's paid traffic option and it coverts very poorly for me. Seems people are not so interested in buying or taking action on SU.

And although I paid for the traffic rather than get it organically. When I turn it off the return traffic is practically non existent and from what I've heard form others the same is true for the organic traffic.

    Here today gone tomorrow.

well, its been about a week now.
traffics died down a bit and leveled out around 1000 per day from stumbleupon.

my alexa rank shot down by about 4 million since this happened :)
and picking up a few more clicks and subscribers.

a good cache means this hasent really hit my server load at all.so i guess ill just leave it be for awhile even with the abysmal CTR.

Non-clicking traffic = cost. Block those freeloading fuckers from even viewing your site.
