I don't know about you guys but I've been having trouble sleeping for years now. I usually go to sleep around 4-5 am everyday and wake up around 10am usually. I feel like I don't get enough sleep, but no matter what I do, I just can't fall asleep. I've tried doing all nighters many time so I can fall asleep the next day earlier, but it never works. I've tried going to bed earlier like around 10pm, but I can never fall asleep until 4am.

SO when do you guys usually sleep and are their any methods, rituals or tips you guys have that makes it easier to fall asleep?

I got to sleep at 10:30 an wake up at 7 every night. I can't function without a good amount of sleep.

look up techniques for good sleep hygiene, it's a pretty complex thing an you're probably doing something wrong.

If you're looking for sleep rituals, then send Pewep a message.

As for my sleep pattern, it is idiosyncratic; I sleep whenever I feel like it for an arbitrary amount of time. Just last night, I went to bed at 2 in the morning and woke up at 6 in the morning to go look at yard sales feeling fine. The night before, I slept for 5 hours and woke up to check some analytics data for one of my websites.

If you want my advice, take melatonin for a week on the days you can't sleep, although don't rely on them to get to sleep for too long.

Look at your diet and maybe hit the gym too. My problem is staying awake lol. I hit the sack early and rise about 4-5 am. I try to get the gym in mon-fri and also hit the bags on them days too. By dinner time Im ready for bed :)

I sleep usually at all times. How do I fall? First my legs are down and head is up, then my head goes down while the legs go up. Then both go up, then both go down down. It happens like this 10-12 times, then it stabilizes....

    Now my turn....

How many times exactly do you chew your food? Do you use dentures?

    Seriously,
just look at the wall clock and see yourself falling asleep at a particular time. Do this continuously and within few days or weeks, you'll fall asleep whenever you choose to (at the time you've "set up"). :) Try it.

A lot of people think insomnia is a primary problem... but in most cases I view it as a secondary problem or symptom of underlying issues.

Some of the best sleep I ever got in my life was ironically in prison. Even though I was depressed, anxious, stressed or scared most of the time. Even though I was usually the last to go to bed and first to wake up. I still slept better in prison than any other time in my life.

And I believe the reasons for this were pretty simple:

    1) If you weren't under your sheets by 11pm a CO would come into your cell and threaten you.
    2) Other inmates would threaten you.
    3) At 6am the alarms would sound of at like 80 decibels. COs would pound on your door. A lot of times they'd go in cells smashing pans just for fun.
    4) Everything was rigid as rigid can get. "Tight" was the word I heard at least 100 times a day. "Tighten it up". Everything timed to same exact minute everyday.
    5) Stress levels were so high it forced you to exert yourself physically in any way you could so you didn't lose your mind.
    6) If you weren't sleeping well, you weren't surviving well. A lack of sleep = off your game = grumpy = more likely to be assaulted over some dumb shit.

Let me try to refine this down in a way you can better relate to.

I personally believe that health and time management are the 2 most important factors for sleep.

Maybe you go to bed at 5am every morning and wake up at 10-11am. I'd be very curious to know if everything else you do throughout the day is planned... or random.

Do you eat at the same times every day?
Do you divy up your days into 3's?
8 hours for work, 8 hours for play / exercise, 8 hours for sleep?
Do you exercise at all or physically exert yourself?
Do you tell the clock what to do (ignore it) or does the clock tell you?
Do you follow a rigid schedule?
Do you turn the lights off at the same time every night?
Do you know what sleep "zeitgebers" are?
Do you eat vegetables every day?

A lot of this all comes down to consistency and common sense.

If you're hanging out on your computer for 12 hours a day, you're not gonna sleep well imo. You're robbing yourself of time to exercise which is really important.

Or maybe you're like my 3rd brother. He's a well paid butcher. Works his ass of 7 days a week. He's inside a freezer 9 hours a day (except for sundays) using his muscles all day long. Yet he's always bitching about sleep. And everyone in our family knows why he can't sleep well. Because he's the most anti-vegetable person I ever met in my life. When I use to live with him I'd see him eat whole vegetables maybe twice a month at most. At one point me and my other brother convinced him to start eating vegetables lol. He did it for a few months and starting sleeping like a baby. No complaints. Then he fell off the veggie wagon, went back to his normal diet, and is back to bitching about his sleep like always.

There are A LOT of men and women, both in the military and prison, who ALL use to be self proclaimed "insomniacs" or "night owls". Or they always slept "lightly". When they get in a boot camp like structure, that changes them faster than anything you can think of. And most of them will sleep like babies. The only ones who don't are the people coming back from battle with serious PTSD. People with TB, sleep apnea or other OBVIOUS problems (medicines, etc) that will effect sleep.

If you don't have any obvious issues like that, then I'd be willing to bet that your life style in general is the issue.

You can go on like this for the rest of your life like a lot of people do. I see guys on YT making videos who are in their 50's and believe they have incurable insomnia. But when you hear their stories, it takes like 5 minutes to realize these people have merely fooled themselves. They have to convince themselves they have a problem as a means to justify not having discipline.

And the problem is, so many people think a lack of discipline = lazy. It doesn't. It just means you do the wrong shit more often than you do the right shit.

So TRY doing all the right shit. Something tells me you already KNOW why you go to bed late. That people have probably told you. But you've never really tried your best to fix it. Because the real issue can be the sole fact you've been doing this for as long as you have. So it's become part of your identity. You associate with being that person. You've developed all the psychological constructs that help you to keep being that person.

I think the tough but obvious question is, can you stop being what you've made yourself into? Do you WANT TO stop being that person (really want it)?

    Good luck.

Or I can sleep at 5pm and wake up at 1am.

I have a similar problem. I usually get enough sleep time-wise (go to bed around 10pm -> 7-8am Wake up). But I literally wake up EVERY night to go take a piss, because i drink water right by my bed at night (im always thristy even if i drink 3-5 liters per day).

Anyone have tips how to break that annoying habit?

i used to face the same problem, started taking meds ( niterest10 ) , got a sleeping routine 11-7 (8 hours ) which went on for 8-9 months and which was perfect , before i realised i relied too heavily on medications and it had started showing side-effects.
Gave medication up, back to sleeping at 4-5 am and waking up at 10-11am.
Whatever you do, don't go for sleeping pills.

Humans are creatures of habit, if you go to sleep at 5am and wake up at 10am every single day... It's going to become a ritual.

It's like trying to re-learn how to ride a bide, except everything is reversed from what you original knew.

It should be physically impossible to pull that kind of sleep schedule and to add up any kind of alcohol would fuck up sleep quality...
