There is an "seo company" that's doing something weird.

For the purpose of this question, I will name the seo company's domain seocompany.com

so they create different subdomains for different businesses. like
    HomeDepot.seocompany.com
    Lowes.seocompany.com
    EmergencyLocksmith.seocompany.com

Then on every one of these subdomains, they have the names of a bunch of cities. like

    san diego
    san francisco
    Los Angeles
    Boston
    Austin
    Houston

just the names of a bunch of cities, no other content.

I heard from someone that works there, the owner will then approach these businesses (Lowes, home depot, lock smith) and try to sell them the subdomain?

I checked the domain and it has zero backlinks. zero.

supposedly, this guy gets 200 accounts a month.

    What in the hell?

The fact that you are seeing zero backlinks doesn't mean there aren't any backlinks pointing to them. Maybe there's a ton of backlinks from their PBN pointing to the subdomains that are blocking ahrefs, majestic and so on from seeing them, or maybe when the buyer orders, the seo company will begin building the links. The buyer can then host their site on the subdomain and rank easily, or redirect the subdomain to their existing site.

I am guessing that if a potential client searches for 'San Diego Emergency Locksmith SEO' they will see the SEOCompany in the results?

That would be a good way to give themselves credibility when pitching to an unsuspecting client:

'Hey Mr Lockmith, this is John from SEO Company.

We specialise in doing SEO work for Emergency Lockmiths.

In fact, we are so well known in this sector that if you search for 'San Diego Emergency Locksmith SEO' you will probably see our website in the results?

Can you imagine the impact we could have on your business if we were to do your SEO work for you!

When would be a good time to arrange a consultation?'

It's a bit disingenuous, but it's clever and it would work.

except they don't come up for any of those keywords. they do come up for some weird ass super easy keywords like emergency locksmith [some weird city that nobody ever searches for]
but the good keywords, no, they don't come up for those.

maybe they are just new and don't know how to apply this very good, though the technique seems quite good :)

But surly no one is dumb enough to fall for that crap? It wont take long for Good to catch onto that and then penalize every website that has a sub-domain point to it from that SEO company?

Google has taken down large SEO companies before for link building and other dirty tricks.

    Yes.

I'm not an SEO guy, but this would be the type of thing I would think of if I was.

I wouldn't list a whole lot of cities on one subdomain though.

I would have a separate one for each city, making redirects easier.

I would also get some content for each one - with multiple potential customers for each city/sector combination it would be worth a few dollars each.

From where I stand, I don't see them lasting a while if they keep up on this route. Sure, there's a tweak to this that works, but this is not that tweak, this is different.

I think it's smart of them to have zero backlinks on sub-domains until they've banked in a client. That way they stay under the radar.

Just had a look into my crystal ball and saw a thin content penalty on the way.

lol , you cannot sell subdomains. having a homedepot in your subomain can take your site down in minutes.

Anything involving company names that are separate from the company creating it itself smells trouble.

The only logical explanation could be the post by Trepanated above

They are not selling SEO, they are selling advertising.

    EDIT:
Wait. Something just occurred to me. What do the sold pages look like?

And IRL is the "SEOcompany.com" the name of an SEO company, or a generic domain name, and is the city a subdomain or a page?

It might be some sort of a citation. But I need to know how it is set up to be sure.
