I woke up today to find no volume on my computer. I wasted 3 hours trying to figure out what was wrong. Finally did a scan and I had 3 viruses. Since I cleaned them the sound is back. What the hell is the purpose of a virus other than to piss people off?

It haves 2 scopes. The first one is to make money to the person that uses them, and the second one is to make money to antivirus companies.

My first thought since you said it disabled your sound is to run ads in the background so you can't notice

All great reasons...but lets not forget the other one...Because they can..They get the thrill out of the actual accomplishment...The high is almost as as good as the money (I said ..almost as good) :)

It depends on the type of virus. Some are botnets to send a massive amount of email that most of the time may inbox since it is on clean ISP mail servers. Other times it is to gain access to files and contact list. As others mentioned, it is to attract you to their products.

Years ago, people made viruses because they could even if there was not much harm to it. Now, it is about money and information. Logins, credit cards, etc.

On another note, install PC Tools + AntiVirus and MalwareBytes. Keep both versions running live.

After I started IM, I realized that many files online are packed with viruses. The ones on here are pretty clean but there are many out there that are not. I've been a lot smarter with my downloads but since having both (paid versions), I've not had any viruses and they stop access to rogue websites dead in their tracks.

It's a great combination and one I recommend to everyone.

Did anyone of you ever had the virus that keep repeating a file over and over? Back around 2004, I downloaded a file that was like maybe 500KB at the most on limewire, and it ended up taking up 10GB of space.

Worst virus I got was last summer, when I downloaded a IM software and it caused everything to be deleted on my pc.Luckily alot of my good stuff,I already backed up.

Me and my dad have a theory that all Anti Virus companies go around creating viruses so that people need/pay for anti virus programs.

That 's a zip bomb. It was used as a countermeasure against antivirus software.
The antivirus would try to unzip the file to scan its contents and it would time-out/crash or skip it.

The gist of the trick is that there is a method to create small zip files that when extracted occupy a huge space (terabytes if you 'd like) with "mostly empty" files.

It was also used to kill mail servers anti-spam software ;) Interesting idea, no? :D

They don't actually need to, lots and lots of criminal organizations create malware nowadays. This is a "mature" market dominated by offline mafia.

As stated, this is big business, run by serious people.
Sure their are skids that like to make pointless botnets to boot people from online games when they are loosing, but most viruses are their to make money, either by controling your PC, stealing your information, or tricking you into buying something (the fake AV viruses).
There are also ones that just kill your PC. These get made for a variety of reasons, Sometimes deliberatly attached to fake 'nulled' software by the original software developers.

The viruses which are created to purely destroy your computer, they mostly do it for E-fame, seeing their virus making the news and all that jazz.
