I'm just gonna show you a graph, maybe you can understand better than me what is going on:
    Schermata 2016-09-15 alle 16.40.38.png
The blue line is the number of clicks
The yellow line is the CTR
The red line is the number of impressions
The green line is the average position

On September the 13th the number of impressions on one of my sites increased dramatically while the average position, decreased a lot (from 12,2 to 16,3). I don't understand what is going on.
I checked many pages, and most of them show the same behaviour.
No manual antispam action reported, no big changes made by me in the last few days: I've been writing content as usual, posting some comments here and there and linking the site to social networks.

    I'm quite scared...

I'm seeing similar. Do you have a high keyword anchor text % pointing to that site?

I'm not using any backlink schemes here, mainly plain and simple links and two comments with two different anchor text pointing to two different pages.

Keeping it completely white hat, because I want to rank this site slowly and solid.

It's normal to see a drop in Average Position when your impressions shoot up. Imagine this:

You rank first page for a handful of low volume keywords. These keep ranking and that's where your clicks are coming from (explains why clicks are stable). Suddenly you also rank bottom of the first page with a high volume keyword. Now you get an impression for any searcher who stays on the first page of results, no matter if they click on your result. Your impressions shoot up, but average CTR plummets and if it's a high volume keyword that you're showing for, your average position will drop too.

Drill down into your pages and queries and figure out where the increase in impressions is coming from. Looking at your average rankings you will probably find that you actually went up in rankings with some keywords, but you're now showing at the bottom of the second page, so clicks are lagging behind.

    Ehi @Antoine07, really good hint!

I started checking as you suggested, and I found something slightly different but in line with your thoughts.
On average on that site I had 250 keywords ranking on a given day.
On the 13th the number of keywords ranking is of 780. More than 3 times the keyword usually ranked.

That seems good news, isn't it? :D
Now I am curious to see if those keywords are gonna rank a bit. If so things are going great.

Thanks again for showing me a good method!

Sometimes, it's because an image ranks and you're getting a lot of impressions on the image, but no one clicks the image. If you sort by Impressions, it's easy to see what the cause of it is.
