It's not at all all about link building.
They are moving away from it actually.
PageRank is still big part of the equation but they are able to produce decent results even without it or using it very little.
It's becoming more and more about content, covering the topic in detail and matching search intent.

This is spot on!! As Google's algorithm improves, it is understanding content better and matching it with with search queries. Thus relying less on links.
Links are still an important factor, today. But that could change at anytime.
Just try ranking a spun article with back links and one very well written and indepth article without any backlinks. The well written one will out rank the garbage article in the long run.

You don't need to follow an elaborate list of on page SEO factors. Just use your keyword in the page title sensibly. Then write the rest of the article for the user, you don't need to repeat keywords or use Surfer to optimize anything. Cover the topic properly and answer the search query. That's all you need. Build most of your links to your home page, and some to your hardest keywords. Interlink properly. I don't do anything else, I don't even use an SEO plugin.

Most likely, his previous posts were all about cryptocurrency, he may not be familiar with SEO!
