So we had a 135k traffic kw on front page with adsense. At the bottom of front it was earning between 5 and 10 dollars a day. At position 2 it earned at best 80 dollars in a day but that was a really strong day on sunday.

This is all with a huge ctr of between 20 and 30%.

Anyhow with such profits from such a high traffic and ctr kw im thinking with other more average kws (your run of the mill ones of between 6 and 15k) it would take many tens to reach just that amount? meaning it would take 100 plus ranking to reach any sort of decent income? thats no problem if the kws are easy to find and easy to rank but they've been neither from my experience so far- tho id like to hear other's experience on this too dealing with such volume.

    What are other's stats?

You're right, you have to rank for a lot of lower traffic keywords to make a good income.

I wrote this thread about estimating the value of a keyword to give you an idea.

Another stat I have noticed is that for a keyword of 1000 monthly searches you should be making a minimum of $20 per month at #1. You can scale that a number of ways but for the average newb who doesn't know about layout and picking decent keywords, that's roughly what they should expect. That's not a ton of money considering the work put into it.

This does not mean that SEO is not a viable income source. But if I were a newb starting out today with what I know now, I would not have started with SEO. I think I would be an e-whore, but we're not allowed to talk about that. ;)

I dont like making number 1 the goal as you have to plan for margin of error. If it gets in top 5 great but I know its alot easier to get front page than top 5 and would prob be alot easier to rank a few more on front 6-10 thank get one in 5-1.

Sure a long term goal to chip away at but not the immediate one.

best option is to reinvest in unique & quality content if you got 20-30 % ctr seems your convert is prettY good one ... just hit more big keyphrases and long tails around them with content growing and slow link building

That is why so many people fail.
They expect to do SEO and make $100s a day.

SEO is a lot of work.... and the rewards are not massive.
so that is why people scale it.....
    then you see some money.

Haha, I never settle for anything less than #1. Most IMers feel like that is an unattainable goal so they stop pushing for it when they get in the top 3 or top 5 or even just on the first page. That makes my work a little easier. If you are not pushing your site to #1 you are leaving a lot of money on the table for the little bit of extra work involved. You'll make half the income at #2 and it just goes downhill from there. If you're not going for #1 your income estimates will be much more dismal.
