I am in the middle of creating a guide in Word. It's quite a big guide and I'm thinking of changing it to a .PDF as an eBook.

I am looking to design an eBook similar to the ones shown on:

    http://www.creativeebookdesign.com/portfolio.html

However, do any of you know what software they use to create these eBooks? Of course, I could use a WORD to PDF converter, but I tried that and it doesn't work. Any ideas?

definatelly not Illustrator :D ... it creates graphics not books.

graphics are done with Illustrator or CorelDraw
    images with Photoshop
and it is all put together (text+images+graphics) in InDesign (as well Adobe product)

    .. you are welcome :)

    OMG....

    guys, be professional!

if you have to make a flyer - you can use photoshop, illustrator, word, powerpoint and even ms paint.

BUT - if you have to make a book with many pages - you will want to start with creating a non-changing layout, keep the same spacing, fonts, styles and many, many other basic things - and there is software out there for it. 2 main ones are: Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress.

I did suggest InDesign as it seems much easier to use it and it works really well with photoshop and illustrator.

experience?? I had a publishing company some time ago (did publish some books as well).

the only difference with printed books - PDF file is your final product, when in printing that is just a stage when product is ready to be sent to print-house.

sometimes it is unbelievable that people suggest things for an industry they haven't got real professional experience in :/

    peace

    :)

well, you did not mentioned about any specific device...but I use ipad and here I can give you some tips associated with ipad.................Apple's ibook author is a free software program that lets you create eBooks with minimal effort. You can either publish your eBooks as standard PDFs, that can be read anywhere, or export them in the iBook format that can also be distributed through Apple's iBookstore..............The downside is that Apple has developed iBooks Author exclusively for the Mac platform and second, eBooks created using this authoring tool can only be sold through the iBookstore...............The eBook is available as a free download on the O'Reilly website and you can have it in either PDF, ePUB or MOBI formats depending on where you want to read that book. It is now among the top selling titles on Amazon in the computers and Internet eBooks category...................I hope this will be helpful if you use ipad..................goodluck...........
