Besides Facebook and Google+, where else does your website have to have a following? What emerging social networks are going to be critical?

    Instagram & Twitter bro.

OK joking kind of. But use the social sites to drive traffic to your site. Some will be better than others depending on your angle/niche. People have Chrome, use Android etc. So someone like me who doesn't use Google Analytics on my sites, G & other search engines still have an idea of people activity on my site from social sites. Do it kore for traffic and the "social signals" will work themselves out SEO wise...

For SEO, I would say twitter. With the right bots, some retweets could send you up there, if only for a bit...

These sites are actually a better platform for traffic than ranking.

You should focus on links from do follow sites (not social sites....) if you wish to SEO your site.....

I'd be getting on Twitter as soon as possible.

You can also throw LinkedIn and YouTube into the mix too if you don't already have a presence on there.

From what I've personally noticed I think Twitter is a hot-spot for people within the IM niche.

I know it can be a headache trying to manage all of these at once but most of the time you can use plugins to automatically have the content that you post on your website or blog reflected on your social media profile timelines and news feeds.

Just personally I like to hedge my bets a little. Facebook might be enormous at the moment but at any given time that can flip on its head.

The heart and soul of social media is people and, for the most part, people are fickle and will move from one hot trend to the next. Put a few eggs in all of the social media baskets and you'll find that you'll have a diverse and well-rounded social media presence.

My wife's blog got a huge boost from pinterest and stumbleupon. She has a cooking blog with a lot of nice pictures. She indexed about 1000 backlinks in a couple months from this.
