I have a wonderful friend who said to me once (when I was moody & feeling sorry for myself) " Cheer up you big fanny!!". I first thought "You cheeky...." then I started laughing & really laughed. If I feel low I think to myself "Cheer up you big fanny!!" :D:D

    What works for you?

Rotem Guez has the right idea!!

But seriously. Your thought patterns reinforce themselves over time. This is because the neural pathways associated with certain feelings get strengthened with use. If you don't use them, they'll wither up and get weak. Just like muscles: use it or lose it.

That means, if you think negatively and dig yourself deeper into depression, you will be depressed more often. On the other hand, if you think positively, you will strengthen those neural pathways which lead to positive feelings, and you will be depressed less.

This sounded like a crock of feel-good bullshit to me, but I tried it and I think it has made a significant difference. When you're feeling down, try to think positive. If that doesn't work, at least avoid thinking negative. Don't sit there and think "oh man, this is so bad... this is terrible... I'll never make it through this." The Buddhists say to acknowledge your negative feelings but don't dwell on them; like looking at passing clouds.

Everyone gets the blues sometimes. There's no point in focusing on it. I think of it like the weather. It's just there.

    Yes that's right!
Lack of sleep makes you depressed and more worried. I don't usually sleep well but yesterday I went to bad early and I FEEL AWESOME!!

Best possible answer to this question.

As a huge neurology enthusiast, particularly neuroplasticity, I agree complete.

This is exactly why I meditate with affirmations. Its not a crock of feel good bullshit, Its a constructive way to directly alter your thought process and, in turn, you'll see every aspect of your life start to change.

It takes a certain degree of discipline to force positivity. But after a while of forcing it, you find that you no longer have to.

The fact that Im typing this in response, instead of something cynical like I would have a couple years ago, is proof enough in my eyes

    Thinking positively helps a lot!
Whenever I have that "bad" feeling, I just stop thinking about it and focus on other things instead. It's hard to explain, but I just change bad things into good ones, and it works!

Also, there's more to it. Remember to stay healthy, that is, eat more fruits and veggies, and do physical activities at least every second day.
