So this is my last year of high school and I am taking a year off before college.

What should I do during that year?

My budget is 50K but less is always good. If I am making $1k+ per day by then the budget will be more but idk how much I will be making by then...

    What should I do?

Find a study abroad program? If so, go where?

or.. Get a condo (by the beach, near where I live now in VA) and chill all year with my friends (I am leaning towards this, but my parents are very critical of the idea, but I will be 18 so I can do whatever :D ) Honestly I am considering just living there for 5 years, but my mom will kill me if I told her.. (she knows that if I get a condo I will be smoking a ton of weed and she does not like that)

Anyway, if you had a year to do whatever you want on a 50k budget, what would you do?

travel the world man. my brother's currently doing that. started in asia, now in western europe. travelling east, coming back for Christmas, and then to South America.

18's the perfect time. no responsibilities. you can sit around smokin weed anytime...(you may your whole life). if you have the time and money to see the world, DO IT!

Must be nice to be 18 and make $365k a year. :p

I'm 16 now, so I aspire to be like you...traveling the world would be fun, plus you can work from wherever you stay if you bring your laptop.

TRAVEL THE WORLD!!! why do people always wait till they are OLD to travel? You always see senior citizens going abroad or taking cruises, whats the fun in that? Go when your young. My brother and I just took a trip to mexico, it was only a month, but damn we had a blast, even if you go by your self, there are SO many young travelers, and the women, drugs, beer are so much better in other countries, you will have so much fun, do it man.

Hey man just want to offer some advice. You are throwing a 50k number out. I am not sure if you are using money you have in savings to live this lifestyle or if you are going to earn money you will be making over the course of the year.

At one point in my life I was pretty young and loaded with cash. I ended up taking more like 2 years off and blew through a shit load of cash. The problem is I wasn't earning any money during that period of time. I only mention this because looking back I am upset with myself as I should have been replenishing that money. I mean life changing money when you are talking about 2 years of living expenses.

No one is going to be able to answer your question on what you should do. You are what 17 and talking about a 50k budget. That is insanely impressive.

What I would do is rent yourself a place(do not purchase). You are so young right now that who knows what you will be doing in a year or two. If you purchase(yes you could rent it out later) but it does tie you down so to speak. At your age and apparent earning ability I mean you could do anything. You can travel the world on less than 100k a year with ease. I would start with that as a possibility.

I know college is extremely important to most people however for some it isn't. I have a degree that I have never used as I have managed to be self employed for the last 10 years. It has been nice being self employed but it is also nice knowing I have a degree to fall back on if I ever needed to. So you just have to weigh these options. If you were my son and you told me you were already making 150k+ a year it would not bother me if you didn't go to college. Anything less than that and I would probably encourage you to go. You just never know when your earnings will dry up as they once did for me for a couple years. The internet changes at such a rapid pace that big earners one day can vanish the next. I am a testament to that.

If you do have an interest in school no one says you have to go full time. If you are going to full on take a year off at least take 1 class a semester at your local community college. This will prepare you for a real school and you won't feel like a total bum. And assuming you are not gay there are some hotties up there. Taking a year off doesn't mean taking a year off from getting laid.

    Goodluck

I have big dreams like you and my current plan is to spend 1-2 months in Europe next summer. I have also thought about my friends what about them.

So in my head I will offer my friends to stay with me in Europe for a week or so if they can get off work and all they have to do is provide their airfare. I will pay for everything else.

And of course if I am dating some hottie at the time I will have her join me assuming she has some shit job she can quit. If it is a career girl this will be a much harder task. I will probably just bring one of my FB's or at least fly them in on occasion.

I might also just try to nail a girl from each country I go to. I figure that is a good task.

But yeah definitely take care of your good friends and let them experience a little of the trip with you.

I have been thinking of doing that for a couple weeks in jamaica actually.

Anyway- it turns out my brother is getting a house next year with his friends at the college he goes to (william and mary) and my parents will pay and he invited me to stay there. So it will be like going to college with out the classes and I like the idea of that, plus I will be able to save my money. Plus I will go on vacations. Plus I'd be only an hour away from my friends back home.

So I think I might do that.

I am double your age - take my advice and travel. Go interesting places, meet interesting people, and do things you've never done. Trust me, this you will never regret or forget doing it. Sitting around for a year will leave you with very little in the way of fulfillment. A year of travel will make you grow up a little and be hungry to make more money when you get back. Just my take of course...either way...enjoy!

BTW, unless you've been to Jamaica and really love it for some reason - I am going to say it is HIGHLY overated...been there, done that, won't do it again.

Yeah I know VB is lame compared to the rest the world(I have been to the carrabian a few times etc. I know what real beaches are like), if I stayed there I would still travel a lot. Your probably right about travelling. I am just under pressure from my parents to focus on school and what not

I agree with playercool. I myself was in your position a long time ago. I got myself a sweet pad, lots of parties, etc. After about 2 years the money was gone, I had only taken about 3 classes in college and more importantly I had lost my momentum for making money. I found out the "more you do, the more you'll do". The fact that you had to go to high school allowed you only so much time for IM, so you used that time wisely.
So go to Europe for a couple of weeks. Then get back to work. Go to college. You can get your degree in anything. I find all that free time tends to kill the mind. If it were me with that amount of cash available is spend the money on going and learning from the real "gurus". Go to every internet conference you can, anywhere in the world. That way you can have fun seeing the world and learning/networking from the best. Then take the rest of the money and scale. Go build yourself some passive income. Do these thing now, before you have a wife, kids, etc.
    Xray
P.S. I hear the army is offering a good "see the world" program that is "all -inclusive".

Don't underestimate just how hard it is to get back in school after a break... you may think the motivation will be there after you have 'had your fun', but it most likely won't.

If a degree is important to you, just ride it out and handle your business. I don't know anyone who took a year off where that year didn't turn into several years or a not at all situation.
