    hello,

So I own a .org (EMD) domain and i just bought the .com (EMD). So my .org is still ranked 2nd and my new .com isnt ranked. so should i totally abandon backlinking the .org and work on the .com?

i never did a 301 redirect before so i dont know the proper steps.

    any advice is greatly appreciated.

No don't build backlinks to a redirected domain. How unnatural does that look, why would some one link to a url if its not accessible and can't be viewed?!

Also are you aware that if you 301 redirect a url it will eventually be removed from the SERPS?

Also in your post its not clear which domain you have set a 301 redirect on.

Is it the .org or the .com ?
