What SEO to offer to keep clients to make recurring payment instead of a one-time payment?

Hey guys, just a quick question for you internet marketers, reputation managers, and SEO experts.

Once you guys have clients and you set them up with a first-page google result, google Places ranking, etc., what's to stop the client from retaining your services?

What kind of maintenance/upgrades do you offer to justify the high cost of monthly payments that SEO/IM/reputation management businesses charge?

Maintenance fees can be justified by explaining how SEO is a competitive space. If you stop building links, someone else will outrank you. It's as simple as that.

You could state in the contract that once they have reached #1 the months payments drop down and are just charged for maintenance and explain that if link building immediately stops then it could cause loss of ranking but just to slowly ease off. This will help you maintain clients and as the_demon said, if there are more possible keywords they could target upsell on those :)

A way to enforce what people have mentioned above is to do a good chunk of SEO work through a 301 redirected domain/subdomain/folder on your website. Then when they leave you can turn the redirect off and low and behold their websites drops and they come crawling back :p

You are right. And many SEO companies apply this method in order to get money from clients. Both, clients and you will get benefit from this.

Didn't realize you guys continually build links. I deal with local companies with low competition, so I'm not sure how helpful it is. What sort of link building are you guys doing on a regular basis...?

Btw, the_demon: your "white hat SEO" banner ad could use an angel motif to contrast against the devil-tail motif of your black hat SEO. Use puffy cloud outline instead of the torn-paper look, and put an angel wing or a halo on a cloud or something instead of the clock, and do something like "Fly to the front page" headline or something. Just a thought.
