I've found myself on number 1 for certain KW's and just wondering
what you guys are doing when you get to #1?

With all the updates and such, I'm just curious to hear any views
    or opinions on the subject.

What would you do first -

    More on-page SEO
    High PR links
    More social media exposure

Or maybe just monetize and optimize the site and leave it?
I'd love to hear your opinions BHW.

Continue with the link building but target generic keywords instead. This will keep me from over optimizing it with the same anchor text and let me solidify my rank. For example, if 90% of the anchor text target the already #1 keyword then I would lower it to 30-50% and spread the love around others.

At this point, I would also focus more on no-follow links. Instead of focusing on distancing the gap between my top spot and the number 2 spot, I am interested more in planting my site on the top 3 spots for a long, long time by making the link profile a bit better.

Keep building on all fronts. Always. You can't just walk away and expect all things to remain the same.

Why, you ask? If you're in a competitive niche, the guy who just got pushed down a notch (or two or three) will notice. Then, what do you think he will start doing?

Watch the movie Glengarry Glen Ross. (Yes, right now. You're back? OK.) Remember the famous line "Always be...." except (for you) put the word "building" at the end.

    Always be building.

    Because coffee is for rankers.

I would say continue to build as naturally as possible. Diversify those links with no-follow, water down your anchor texts with words other than you normal keywords (such as your url, click here for more information, etc). Build on your social metrics will continue to be critical in my opinion.

Interesting points, would you guys further improve your on-page SEO?
I kind of don't want to upset anything now they're number 1, but I can
    see room to improve.

I've noticed something which you touched on veheme, which is when your
say number 1 and then say number 10 with another page.

Your number 10 rank shoots up under your number 1 position giving you a major
    bonus number #2 position.

(Tried grabbing an example there but couldn't see one in the SERP's).

Then I continue doing only quality link building and this is the main time when you badly need a regular back link report. I just observe them very carefully and decision what should i do next. I mainly do on page and put quality contents and sometimes i freelance some of my popular posts to make valuable comments.

I buy another domain in the niche, targeting different keywords. Once it ranks at top 10 I interlink the two, and so on and so on.

I have been in SEO profession for 2 years. From my experience I can say that After being no. 1 in the rank The SEO expert should continue creating back links to remain in that position.

I had a site that I was working on around 2 months ago. I got frustrated because I didn't see the results I had hoped for. I was targetting a 40k Exact match keyword and was ranking when I left it around 40. I noticed about 2 weeks ago that I had started to make sales on that site and checked the SERPs and saw I was ranking at 6 for my keyword. This month I've made $115 on that site.

I had done minimal on page SEO and focused my efforts on offpage. I had done link pyramids, .edu blog comments, web 2.0's, article submission, bookmarking and had a heavily used twitter account linked to my website. I am now focusing again on this site to try and rank it first for my search term and many others. I am determined to dominate this niche for all of my keywords.

I have just purchased 100 Retweets to see if it will shift slightly, if it does, I'll buy some more. I'm pretty sure my Twitter account is the reason why I have had a jump in the SERPs. Many of my inner pages are also ranking highly and I have only used OnlyWire and my Twitter account to provide links to these pages.

I think that going with general keywords relating to your main keywords and even a few misspellings and a few of the click heres is the way to go. Just to stay below Google's radar.

You keep mentioning improving the on page SEO, what exactly are you referring to? Changing up the METAs? Adding content with long tail keywords? It's hard to say that you should improve it if it was the reason why you're ranking #1 in the first place unless your offpage SEO is so awesome that it doesn't care if you did no onpage SEO at all.

You can try to dominate the rankings by building links for a subpage and let it rank #2 under your top spot. Your call if it's worth the time. I would rather go and hit all the long tail keywords with the same domain name but of course, continue to build links for inner pages too.
