Hi, I'm looking for some search rank checking software recomendations. I have used a few online tools, and also use SEO Powersuite Rank Checker.

However they all seem to give false results. For example one of my keywords ranks at #10 on google.co.uk, however SEO Powersuite Rank Checker says it isn't even in the top 100 for google.co.uk

I have the the opposite problem with some google.com results. The tools show a #11 position, when in fact I am at #26.

    Any ideas why this happens?

Are you logged in when you are doing your searches? Remember, Google uses your user data to provide customized results. If you frequently visit a site, that page may rank higher for you than it would someone else. The best way to avoid this is to use Private browsing and not be logged in to anything.

Google also takes into account your geographic location for some search results. I will get different results for Dentist than you since we live in different locations.

If you need ranking reports on a daily basis, PowerSuite Rank Checker or AuthorityLabs.com work well. For a more featured rank tracking service that is updated weekly, SEOmoz PRO or Raven SEO Tools (powered by authority labs) work fine.

So far, I have found Rank Checker and SEOmoz PRO to give the most consistent/accurate results. I used Raven for all of 2011 to track a total of aprox 60 websites and about 1300 keywords, but I have decided to move to Rank Checker as I often want/need to check results more frequently than once a week or I may have a select group of keywords I want updated which is not possible with SEOmoz PRO or Raven.

    Help that helps :)

While none of the tools are going to be 100% accurate I have rank tracker to be the most accurate one I have used.

How do you "know" that you are at #10 and that rank tracker is wrong?

Thanks for the advice. I will give the other tools a try. It may just be something I am doing wrong - yet I have got other people to run the same search and done it from different locations. Not sure what to trust at the moment.

Rank Checker certainly seems to be the most functional tool I have used. Yet I question its accuracy for this reason. I search from my own PC and am at position #10 (I am in UK), I search from my VPS (in US) on google.com it shows me at #8. I have got other people to do the same search with the same results. Yet rank tracker insists I am not in the top 100.

I wonder why no one has suggest google webmasters. Sure it gives you a delay of 3-4 days and only google SERPs, but delivers the absolute most accurate rankings.

Google Webmaster Tools only provides an avg of rankings instead of your absolute best. In same cases, I rank 1, 2 and 3 for a search term, but GWT says I'm "2" because my avg rank is 2 ((1+2+3)/3=2)

Also, it is harder to be selective about the keywords you want. If you don't show up in any queries, it won't give you rankings.

So it seems I'm not the only one having this problem...but apparently there are not really any suitable methods out there to reliably check rank?

It changes depends on the IP, Try http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/ranking-reports/ And use any proxy sites like hidemyass.com to confirm the ranking. . It's quite tough but still 2 or 3 confirmation would be great . .

From my experience SEOmoz PRO is very accurate but it looks only in the top 50 results.
My preferred tool that has proven to be very accurate is
    Code:
    positeo.com/check-position/
and I know it from the traffic I was getting. Rank Tracker said I was 10th for a kw searched 8k/month while positeo said I was 67. I wasn't getting any traffic. When positeo displayed I was 10th, I saw the traffic I was expecting.

Note: I am outside the US and that's the best tool I could find. Better that scroogle, traffictravis and searching in google (even logged out). These are the only tools I tried, so I can't speak for the rest.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

This is what I have found for my keyword on google.com:

    Rank Checker: 51
    Market Samurai: 67
Traffic Travis: 0 (doesn't seem to pick anything up)
    Rank Ranger: 9
    Positeo: >120
Manual Check from Home PC (with cookies): 7
Manual Check from Home PC (private browsing): 11
Manual Check from VPS (private browsing): 9
Manual Check from VPS using Hidemyass: 9

So it seem Rank Ranger is the most accurate - unless all my manual checks are somehow messed up.

Are these differences due to different datacenters does anyone know?

Built one as a wordpress plugin - http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior...gement-keyword-tracking-plugin-wordpress.html

Basically goes after organic rankings in Google..doesn't take into account localized settings, and will pull down the top 100 rankings. I've been using this to keep track of all the bullshit that Google is putting us through in the last couple of days...this is just one keyword for one site. Na, no fluctuations here or anything (I track 35 keywords for this one site, but unticked the others to highlight my main keyword)-

Another issue I've noticed with ranktracker is that if I perform the exact same check 3 times in a row I will usually get different results. I.E. not in top 100, 4, 87 for the exact same search within minutes of each other. This has been explained to me as the ranks coming from different google data centers, but it doesn't give me a lot of faith in ranktracker.
