The most used and probably most powerful web programming language is PHP.
Easy to learn and really a nice language.

After all most sites on the internet use PHP, you'll hardly find more help for a language than for PHP.
I'd guess next on the list is PERL.

I don't have numbers but how many percent are filled by python, ruby, asp and co ? Most likely a pretty small number.

I usually don't tell people to learn that what most people do, but in web-programming PHP is definitely no bad choice.
For standalone applications I'd not use python, php or any of the interpreter languages.

C/C++ are the most professional way, maybe together with a frame work like wxWidgets.
Easier to get into will be Delphi, C#, BCPP-builder or VisualBasic

C/C++ is more for an expert, it will take a lot of time to learn it but after all those two langauges are the ones without any limits. (Linux, Windows are mostly written in C/C++ as example)

P.S.
Such topics are born for religious wars, I better step away now;)

Thanks all of you for your great tips,

And how about Visual Basic or .Net what are these languages for

and can you guys give some links to resources were i can start learning the basics of above languages

Thanks,
rushi

Rails is not a programming language. It's a Framework. If you want to make software and web based apps, go with Python. Its a rising language in the web world, and is a good language for developing software. Its used extensivley in GUI cinematics and games. PHP is good, but take it from me, and I'm at an expert level, Python would be your way to go to begin with. Later, move onto C++ if you are deadly serious about software development. Or C# (though I'd go with C++).

I am not idiot, ruby is still part of rails isnt it? Other then that its hard to get objective opinions since so many people value their opinion on experience only.

I know what is my experience, php in terms of learning curve is a pain comparing to ruby and its framework, cakephp sucks as well but hence that i would still hold with both ruby and php due to popularity and demand
