That depends highly on the specific niche that you will choose, and which one or ones will be the best for you, you will have o find out by doing some thorough research about the market where you want to operate your business in, and on the number of competitors that you would face in your way. A site for link building sounds like something that could bring you a lot of success but you just need to proceed with it carefully and find an adequate audience for it and add suitable niche categories that will attract a lot of audience to your site and where you wouldn't need to compete with many other sites. So, research and analyses are essential here before you start doing anything else.

I completely agree with you. Website made for the sole purpose of link building should be well researched in the target client niche you want to target. To add we found it easier to negotiate with website owners(new) to be our partners as backlink provider.
