September 11th attacks
Completion of the Human Genome Project
Evidence of flowing water on Mars
Demonstrated existence of the Higgs Boson
Spread of the Ebola Virus
Hurricane Katrina
2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake/Tsunami
Disintegration of the Columbia
The Financial crisis of 2007?08
Release of Paul Blart Mall Cop 2

I would add Columbine (1999 but still, changed tons especially in the US), ISIS and the Ukraine conflict.
