one niche i thought up of brings in about 165k searches a year with 1 phrase.

google adwords search also said this phrase (along with all the other similar ones that came up) had low competition.

    would this be worth doing?

Search count alone is not enough to decide. There are other factors which you need to consider to choose a "profitable niche"

Possible areas where mistake happens - Search count

    1. Are they "EXACT" search count?
    2. Getting constant traffic throughout the year? -This you can check using G insight..

    Others things to consider...

    1. CPC - Is there enough adwords users who spend money for that keyword?
    2. Is that a buyer keyword?
    3. Do you have enough offers to promote for that keyword?
    4. Do you have competitors already ranking for that keyword?

This always seemed strange to me. How can you have a keyword with low competition in the search results, but with relevant adsense ads being served at the same time? I never see it.

Always seemed smarter to target the large, competitive niches and get a fraction of the traffic with high CPC guaranteed.

if you're doing adsense keywords check that keyword in spyfu.com if it has at least 10-15 advertisers, means you will make a profit.
