What kinds of websites are going to fare better in the future? As far as content sites, what kinds of sites are going to work better? Just curious here on your thoughts how things have changed and are changing.

    Bigger ones.

There won't be any format exactly - if there was eveyone would just have identical websites. But size and updates seem to matter more.
As recently as 2011 I'd see MFA 3 page sites ranking for some really commercial terms. Now - if it's not product specific, you barely see them at all.

Sadly mostly it's the "brands" that rank for everything these days. Which makes no fucking sense from Google
Brands are the ones who can afford to pay for advertising - but now they don't have to.
Looking at PPC costs, most of my clients now advertise on other media that's a feck of a lot cheaper than Google and gives a far greater ROI - meanwhile Google is busy giving top SERP results to the only market who WOULD pay them mega bucks PPC - but don't really have to any more

Short answer - bigger sites. more content, updated more often, good links structure (inside and out). Multimedia.

I guess that the focus now is on quality wesites, for sure! It is vital to understand your target users, produce great content, establishe your authority and visibility, and provide a great experience for the users of your site in order to put in the list of quality websites. Properly architecting your site so that the search engines can understand it, including using schema and related markup, addressing local search , and work of this type still matters, too.

It's hard to predict. This is like asking what stocks will be hot in the stock market in the future.

I think there'll always be room for great sites in specific niches, "cult sites" if you will. If you know a lot about a certain type of movies or music for example, your knowledge will always be valued. Now, if that'll make you rich, that's a different question. Right now search engines are massively ignoring the small guy and just bulldozing mum and pop shops, all you see is Amazon, Ebay, etc..

Google is pushing the Walmartization of the WWW, killing small guys and sending traffic to the big guys. The less small guys, the less they have to work. With only big brands on their index they can sit back and cash in....

I think the general sentiment of the previous posts will prove to be accurate. The race to the top is a focus on quality content, as determined by social signals, shares, link neighborhoods, etc. Focus on producing value to consumers, with insightful advice and an "information concierge" approach.

It is difficult to predict but I would go for bigger websites with a lot of pages and quality content. However be specific on your niche and Target traffic from regular users. This will work out pretty well in the coming days.

Optimize your sites for mobile traffic for the future because that is going to be the largest market share of traffic
in the future and you need your website functional for it.

I would put my money on high authority sites with expansive backlink profiles and diversity to link
your micro niche sites too. Now is the time to build high authority sites and private blog networks.

Websites that serve specific needs of a specific market, no matter in which area or niche you're in. With so much competitions you need to put your focus on one single area, find what you're best at, and be the best on it.

As much as I don't like writing this, the more visually stimulating sites will get more attention I think. Sites like pininterest, etc. I mean its OK I guess but im a fan of the written word. :) People are not into reading articles anymore and with the advent and progression of social media...it will contribute to this....I think anyways. People want it now, they want it instantly, and they want it without having to use their noodle.

    /old man rant

    Lol! :)

Content sites with high quality content on specific niches are always good to drive more traffic to your websites.
