Hi, I'm done with content sites (without backlink building) and need some advice on what kind of links to buy for the root domain.

Thanks

Any link is adequate for root domain. Depending on the status of the site (recently created, mature, etc...) you may prefer some type of links or others..

if your website is more like a business than a website you might want to run social media and press release campaigns so you can increase your brand's popularity which, in return, will increase your site authority and get you backlinks naturally.

If you have an affiliate website, though, any type of backlink will do as long as it's not from spammy pages and websites

It is preferred to buy high-quality links from authorized sites which is related to your domain.
Use descriptive links rather than "Click here" links.
It is better to have a healthy mix of both follow and appropriate no-follow links.
Increase the count of links gradually as your site ages.

Only build links from high authority sites and only use brand name as the anchor.

I would recommend Guest post, PBN, Niche PBN with hand-written articles with low spam score.

You can Go for automated link building too. But for the first tier you should have unique hand-written contents. You can manage to post to web 2.0s automatically with your desired publishing times with RankerX or SERengine which is an addon for GSA SER.
You can find relevant topics here in BHW. search for GSA SER(Tier 2/3), RankerX(Tier1), GSA CB and XEvil(captcha breaker)

@imesh83 most people here are talking out of their ass. If you love your site, don't build generic bullshit links. You want your strongest links going to the home page. This is going to really power up your entire site and help rank your inner pages.

I would go with HARO, edu, guest posts/niche edits on sites which don't accept any random site.
If you can get a legitimate looking Wikipedia link, go ahead and get one of those!
If you can splurge then go ahead and get a few editorial links (these aren't necessarily going to help you rank, they're more for showing google that you have a legitimate business)

If you target low comp keywords then do ~80% links to the home page and the rest to your inner pages and maintain topical authority. That's it :)

@DeadJoe is spot on. HARO, branded outreach and editorials are a great choice for homepage links.

I'd also add:

- Top-Tier Citations (even for non-local sites) - easy to do, cheap and allow a brand or raw URL link in most cases.

- Guestographics - creative design is pricey, but it can be super lucrative, as more sites are inclined to add an infographic without compensation.

- A proper Press Release with syndication that lands you on bigger sites like USA Today, Yahoo Finance, AP News et al. - this is also nice for the "As seen on" branding on your homepage. Typically runs you between $1000 - 1500 for a good one.

You can build any type of links to your homepage, just make sure to focus on quality,
this includes anything like web 2.0s, PBNs, guest posts, crowd links, etc...

Start building your own PBN, get guest postes, niche edits and a press release. Also a diversity packages from the Marketplace.
