Removing links is how I recovered homey. The issue was I was overoptimized like you were and had many shitty links. So what I did was remove links that were blog comments/forum profiles and especially directory links.

That reduced my first anchor text over optimization by 30%, now rankings are heading back up.

I'm not working on the full recovery though, I'm hovering around 50 when I fell to 500+ bc of penguin.

Penguin - G dont like your backlink profile. Any easy to grab links are no more having value. I agree to golderdeli delete/remove of overoptimized anchor text links shall be good option to go with.

I'm working on trying to save some penguin hit sites. Let me tell you it's not been easy. Normally I just throw them away and start over but these were some high quality sites.

First thing you need to do is start deleting those bad links and disavowing the ones you can't get deleted. They are toxic. Once you do that apply for a reconsideration and make sure to ask them to give you sample links if you're still in violation. Sometimes they will, sometimes not.

While you do that I would work on building some higher quality links with a naked url or domain.com or the business name if you have one. You need to water down the overoptimized anchors if you're having that issue.

So far I've taken two sites with sitewide penalties to partial match penalties. It's been a few months now and I'm hoping I've cleared up all the bad links. I've deleted or disavowed something like 90% of my links. All of which were from blog networks with unique content. So don't be fooled into thinking that if you use unique content that it somehow is higher quality.

Great advice Jericho . The only thing I can add is that from my experience all my algorithmic hit websites cannot file a reconsideration request.

Can you still file a reconsideration request on algo hit sites? I believe Google took away that functionality a month or two ago.

I was also unaware of reconsideration requests for algo hit sites. I thought those were strictly for manual penalties?

You can resubmit your site and site map to google after each time you cleaned something up for them to recrawl again this works

sure for onsite changes, but how would resubmitting your sites sitemap change your backlinks?

the simple method is dilute your over optimized anchor text with generic anchor text in ur next back linking campaign, if by any chance you are unable to remove your previous links. I believe in, never stop creating back links. what has happened is sometime beyond our control if we don't meet current algorithm. google will keep updating their algorithm on daily basis. this is we who have to decide whether we start from scratch each time when there is a major update or we will go with flow instead of helping google to take their burden on our shoulders. instead of becoming a victim try to push google on their own weight.

Personally I do not think it is the links you add that is going to fix the problem but the
links you disavow that will help the website. Remove your previous links and add more fresh,
hand written articles. Then look towards building your links back.
